The official trailer for the fourth Sumikko Gurashi anime film, titled Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Sora no Ōkoku to Futari no Ko (Sumikko Gurashi The Movie: The Sky Kingdom and the Two Children), has been released, offering a sneak peek and officially announcing Kaela Kimura’s new theme song, “Kimi no Kasa” (Your Umbrella). The film is set to open in Japanese theaters on October 31, 2025.

The newly unveiled full trailer provides an extended look at the upcoming adventure for the beloved San-X characters. It not only showcases the whimsical “Sky Kingdom” setting and new characters but also features a preview of Kaela Kimura’s theme song. Kimura herself penned the lyrics for “Kimi no Kasa,” with music producer Yoshiyuki Tsutaya handling the composition and arrangement.
Kimura shared her thoughts on the theme song, noting that the Sumikko Gurashi characters, despite their complexes and worries, find strength in their friendships. She expressed that “Kimi no Kasa” carries the message that “It’s okay to have weaknesses and doubts. With your friends together, you can overcome any feeling,” hoping to inspire listeners to cherish themselves.
The Story: An Adventure in the Clouds
The fourth installment of the Sumikko Gurashi film series transports the shy characters to a mystical Sky Kingdom located above the clouds. The plot centers around a prince from this Sky Kingdom who visits the Sumikko Gurashi’s town to address a serious water shortage, initiating a new and heartwarming story. The trailer also teases encounters with “monsters” in the Sky Kingdom and the appearance of a new character, “Ebifriedon,” a playful combination of Tonkatsu and Ebifried’s tail.
Production Details and Returning Talent
Naomi Iwata, known for her work on Pingu in the City and Obake Zukan, is directing the fourth Sumikko Gurashi film at Fanworks. Takashi Sumita, from Europe Kikaku, is returning to pen the screenplay. Consistent with previous films, Yoshihiko Inohara and Manami Honjo will serve as narrators. Fanworks has been a consistent production partner for all Sumikko Gurashi TV anime series and previous films.

The Sumikko Gurashi anime film series has steadily grown in popularity since its debut. The first film, Sumikko Gurashi: The Pop-up Book and the Secret Child, premiered in 2019. This was followed by Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Aoi Tsukiyo no Mahō no Ko (The Magical Child of the Blue Moonlit Night) in 2021, and Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Tsugihagi Kōjō no Fushigi na Ko (The Mysterious Child of the Makeshift Factory) in 2023.
