Crunchyroll has announced that it will stream the original anime Onmyō Kaiten Re:verse as it airs in Japan, bringing the isekai battle action story to viewers in North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, and CIS. The anime is set to premiere on July 2, 2025, on Fuji TV’s +Ultra programming block at 12:45 a.m. (effectively July 3).

What’s the Story?

Onmyō Kaiten Re:verse follows Takeru Narihira, a delinquent high school student who is haunted by dreams of a mysterious girl named Tsukimiya. One day, after an accident, Takeru finds himself transported to an alternate world called Denji Heian-kyō, a parallel version of Kyoto during the Heian era.

In this new world, Takeru encounters Tsukimiya, only to be slain by a monster shortly after. However, he soon awakens again in Denji Heian-kyō, realizing he has the power to leap through time. Now, Takeru resolves to learn the mystical arts of onmyōjutsu from the legendary Abe no Seimei to become an onmyōji sorcerer and save Tsukimiya’s life.

David Production’s First Original Anime

Onmyō Kaiten Re:verse marks the first original television anime by David Production, the studio behind popular anime such as JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Fire Force, and Undead Unluck. The anime is directed by Hideya Takahashi (Keijo!!!!!!!!, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind, Urusei Yatsura), who is also credited with the original story concept. Akutō Satō (Release the Spyce) is credited with the original plot concept. Hayashi Mori (Cells at Work! Code Black, Sand Land: The Series) is in charge of the series scripts. Kazuaki Morita (Tsuki ga Kirei, Classroom of the Elite, Carnival Phantasm) is designing the characters. Katsuie Shibata is credited for worldbuilding and research, Kitsuneiro is credited for concept art, and Masahiro Tokuda is composing the music.

Meet the Cast

The cast of Onmyō Kaiten Re:verse includes:

  • Taihi Kimura as Takeru Narihira
  • Maaya Uchida as Tsukimiya
  • Ryōhei Kimura as Abe no Seimei
  • Kaito Ishikawa as Atsunaga
  • Anna Nagase as Yura
  • Marina Inoue as Kazura
  • Chihaya Yoshitake as Shino

Several cast members have shared their thoughts on their characters:

  • Kaito Ishikawa (Atsunaga): “This character is intense, earnest, and occasionally shows unexpected reactions—he keeps you on your toes! During recording, I project my voice with everything I’ve got to match Taishi Kimura’s energy.”
  • Anna Nagase (Yura): “Yura is a strong-willed woman with an unshakable sense of justice. I was captivated by her pride and conviction.”
  • Marina Inoue (Kazura): “This original anime is packed with dense lore, and we often find ourselves cross-referencing glossaries in the booth…Kazura supports others in battle but is also often caught off guard by Takeru’s wild nature. I hope you enjoy watching Takeru’s journey as he unravels the mysteries around him.”
  • Chiharu Yoshitake (Shino): “I’ve wanted to walk alongside Shino since the audition, so I’m filled with joy…The story is full of twists and shocking developments. Please keep an eye on Shino as the drama unfolds!”

Manga Adaptation

A manga adaptation of Onmyō Kaiten Re:verse, written by Fujiko Sakuno and illustrated by Kyūjo Matsumoto, began serialization in Kodansha’s Morning Two magazine on February 6, 2025.

With its intriguing plot, dynamic characters, and stunning animation by David Production, Onmyō Kaiten Re:verse is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated anime of the Summer 2025 season. Be sure to catch it on Crunchyroll starting July 2!.
