From Zero to Hero: Swordsman Anime Adds New Faces!

The anime adaptation of Shigeru Sagazaki’s light novel series, From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman (Katainaka no Ossan, Kensei ni Naru: Tada no Inaka no Kenjutsu Shihan Datta noni, Taisei Shita Deshitachi ga Ore o Hōttekurenai Ken), has revealed additional cast members in its fourth promotional video. The series, which premiered on April 5, 2025, is currently streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime Video worldwide.

New Cast Members Announced

The latest promo video unveils two new voice actors joining the cast:

  • Ai Kayano as Rose Marblehart, the lieutenant of the Holy Order of the Church of Sphene.
  • Hidenobu Kiuchi as Gatoga Lazorne, the broad-minded Knight Commander of the Holy Order of the Church of Sphene.

These additions promise to add depth to the already colorful cast of characters in this fantasy adventure series.

Story Synopsis

From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman tells the story of Beryl Gardinant, a self-proclaimed “humble old man” who works as a sword instructor at his dojo in a rural village. Once, he dreamt of achieving glory as a master swordsman, but those days are behind him. His quiet life is disrupted when a famous former pupil visits him with surprising news: he has been appointed as a special instructor for the knights of the Liberion Order.

With his life completely changed, Beryl travels to the capital and reunites with some of his former students, who now include elite knights, a top-notch wizard, and a high-ranking adventurer. Despite his reservations, he takes on his new role, leading to a series of comedic and action-packed events.

Light Novel Series

The anime is based on the light novel series written by Shigeru Sagazaki, with illustrations by Tetsuhiro Nabeshima. The series began serialization on the Shosetsuka ni Naro website in November 2020 and was later acquired by Square Enix in April 2021. J-Novel Club publishes an official English version of the light novels.
