After two decades of captivating readers with its epic tale of Vikings, revenge, and the search for a peaceful land, Makoto Yukimura’s acclaimed manga series, Vinland Saga, is drawing to a close. Fans around the world are preparing to bid farewell to Thorfinn and his companions as the final chapter is set to be published on July 25, 2025.

A Long Journey Ends

The news of the manga’s impending conclusion was officially announced in June 2025, with the final chapter, Chapter 220, appearing in the September 2025 issue of Kodansha’s Monthly Afternoon magazine. This marks the end of a remarkable 20-year serialization that began in Weekly Shōnen Magazine in April 2005 before moving to Monthly Afternoon.

Makoto Yukimura shared a message with his fans on X, expressing his apologies for the late announcement and for the break in June due to the demanding work on the final chapter. He also noted the difficulty in creating the artwork for the finale.

From Revenge to Redemption

Vinland Saga has garnered immense praise for its compelling narrative, historical accuracy, and profound themes. The story initially follows Thorfinn, a young Viking warrior consumed by a thirst for revenge against Askeladd, the man who murdered his father, Thors. However, as the series progresses, Thorfinn undergoes a significant transformation, abandoning his violent ways to pursue peace and build a community in the New World, Vinland.

This thematic evolution has been a key aspect of the manga’s appeal. Vinland Saga explores the complexities of violence, guilt, redemption, and the search for meaning in a brutal world. The series doesn’t shy away from depicting the harsh realities of the Viking Age but also offers a message of hope and the possibility of breaking free from the cycle of violence.

Author’s Inspiration and Influences

Makoto Yukimura has cited various sources of inspiration for Vinland Saga. The initial idea stemmed from his interest in stories about Europeans coming to the Americas and the arduous journeys they undertook. He was also inspired by the King of Norway, Olaf Tryggvason, which led him to write a story about slavery. However, his editor was initially against the idea of Thorfinn being a slave, so the character was changed to a Viking. Yukimura agreed with this change, as he wanted Thorfinn to understand the tragedy he caused as a Viking later in the narrative.

Yukimura’s personal experiences and observations have also influenced the series. His sensation during the Cold War and the September 11 attacks were projected onto Thorfinn’s character, adding depth and complexity to his journey.

A Legacy of Acclaim

Vinland Saga has received widespread critical acclaim and commercial success. The series won the Grand Prize at the 13th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2009 and the 36th Kodansha Manga Award for Best General Manga in 2012. By August 2022, the manga had over 7 million copies in circulation.

Critics have lauded Vinland Saga for its fluid action sequences, compelling characters, and thought-provoking themes. The manga’s willingness to evolve thematically over time has also been praised, with many considering it a meaningful coming-of-age narrative.

Anime Adaptations

Vinland Saga‘s popularity has led to two seasons of an anime television series adaptation. The first season, produced by Wit Studio, aired in 2019 and was met with critical acclaim for its animation, direction, writing, and handling of the Viking’s violence. The second season, animated by MAPPA, premiered in 2023 and continued to explore the series’ themes of slavery, pacifism, and Thorfinn’s psychological state.

Both seasons of the anime have been streamed on platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, and Crunchyroll, introducing Vinland Saga to a broader global audience.

What to Expect From the Ending

As the final chapter approaches, fans are eagerly anticipating how Makoto Yukimura will conclude Thorfinn’s journey. The “Vinland Arc,” the manga’s final phase, revolves around Thorfinn’s vision of building a peaceful community free from violence and threats.

While some anticipate a bittersweet or even tragic ending, many hope that Thorfinn’s pursuit of peace will ultimately be realized. Yukimura himself has expressed a desire for a conclusion that “suits the story,” leaving fans optimistic about a meaningful and satisfying resolution.

Creator’s Next Move

With Vinland Saga coming to an end, many fans are curious about what Makoto Yukimura will work on next. The author has mentioned that he has an idea for a new manga, one that will be completely different from his world-famous story. He expressed interest in exploring science fiction themes. However, Yukimura has also stated that he has no intention of working on it for the foreseeable future, citing fatigue after two decades of continuous work on Vinland Saga.

The Impact of Vinland Saga

Vinland Saga has left an indelible mark on the manga and anime landscape. Its unique blend of historical fiction, action, and philosophical exploration has resonated with readers and viewers worldwide. The series’ evolution from a revenge-driven narrative to a profound meditation on peace and humanity has solidified its place as a modern masterpiece.

As the final chapter approaches, fans are preparing to celebrate the legacy of Vinland Saga and the unforgettable journey of Thorfinn Karlsefni. The series’ themes of violence, redemption, and the search for a better world will continue to inspire and resonate with audiences for years to come.
