Arc System Works and Yuke’s have showcased new gameplay mechanics for Double Dragon Revive in a recent “Showcase Trailer,” offering a detailed look at the modern beat ’em up’s combat system. The game, set to launch on October 23, 2025, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam, aims to blend classic arcade action with contemporary refinements.
Evolved Combat and Strategic Depth
The new trailer emphasizes a combat system designed for dynamic and strategic encounters, moving beyond simple button-mashing. Players will utilize a wide array of attacks and abilities, adapting their approach to various situations and enemy types. Key mechanics highlighted include “Basic Attack,” “Grab,” “Special Moves,” “Mid-Air Special Moves,” “Super Special Moves,” and “Critical Assault.”
A central element of the updated combat is the ability to grab enemies, allowing for a variety of follow-up actions such as pummeling, throwing them into groups of foes, or even sending them flying off the stage. Environmental interaction plays a significant role, with attacks adapting when near walls, triggering devastating follow-up strikes for grabbed opponents.
Unleashing Hyperlows and Critical Assaults
For managing multiple enemies, the game introduces “Hyperlows,” powerful area-of-effect attacks. These can clear out surrounding foes, with aerial Hyperlows possessing different properties depending on the player’s altitude. Precision is rewarded with the “Perfect Counter” or “Critical Assault” mechanic; correctly timed attacks will stun enemies, creating openings for further punishment.
The “Dragon Orb Gauge” is another crucial addition, building up as players land attacks, utilize weapon attacks, or successfully execute critical assaults. Once charged, this gauge allows players to unleash a “finishing blow” that clears out nearby enemies and deals substantial damage.
Environmental Interaction and Weaponry
Double Dragon Revive brings back the series’ hallmark weapon-based actions, featuring a variety of armaments like knives, tofas, and hammers that pack a serious punch. Some items can even be kicked and launched as projectiles, adding another layer to combat strategy. The game’s stages are designed with diverse “gimmicks,” encouraging players to use the terrain and objects to their advantage, with some environmental hazards formidable enough to take down even the strongest enemies in a single blow.
Players will step into the roles of series protagonists Billy Lee and Jimmy Lee, among other playable characters, as they confront a roster of classic and new adversaries, including Roper, Abobo, Williams, Joji, Anh, Minh, Marcus, Linda, and Raymond. The game promises a modernized graphical style while staying true to the spirit of the original Double Dragon arcade classics.
