The second trailer for Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express CG anime short has unveiled additional cast members, the theme song, and confirmed its July 3 premiere. The highly anticipated sequel to Yohei Kameyama’s viral 2022 short, Milky☆Highway, is set to debut on Tokyo MX in Japan and simultaneously stream globally on YouTube.
New Additions to the Ensemble
The latest trailer introduces several new voice actors joining the cast, expanding the roster of characters for this space-faring adventure. Hisako Kanemoto will voice Akane, Mikako Komatsu takes on the role of Ryōko, Kōki Uchiyama is cast as Kurt, Makoto Koichi as Kanata, and Yoshitaka Yamaya as Max. These new additions will join the previously announced main cast, which includes Momoka Terasawa as the super-human Chiharu and Anna Nagase as her cyborg best friend, Makina.
Classic Tune for a Cosmic Journey
The newly revealed theme song for Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express is “Gingakei Made Tonde Ike!” (Fly to the Galaxy!), a 1977 track by the iconic Japanese girl group Candies. This retro pop song is expected to provide a unique auditory backdrop to the anime’s futuristic, chaotic narrative.
Story and Production Details
Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express continues the story of Chiharu and Makina. The duo, previously arrested for violating space traffic laws, are sentenced to community service: cleaning an interplanetary train known as the “Milky☆Subway.” What should have been a simple task quickly devolves into pandemonium when the train unexpectedly blasts off into deep space, leading to a high-speed, chaotic journey with “no purpose, no principle, no point,” driven purely by momentum.
Yohei Kameyama, the visionary behind the original Milky☆Highway short, reprises his multifaceted role for the sequel. He is credited with directing, writing, producing, handling character designs, modeling, animation, and editing, showcasing his incredible one-man production approach. The original Milky☆Highway short gained significant traction on YouTube, accumulating over 6.7 million views, and Milky☆Subway aims to build on that success with its global release. The anime will be available with dubbed versions in ten languages, including English, Portuguese, Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Thai, Indonesian, French, Hindi, and Russian, ensuring broad international accessibility.
The CG anime short is set to premiere on July 3 on Tokyo MX at 9:54 p.m. JST, with simultaneous streaming on YouTube.
