A-1 Pictures recently unveiled a new trailer and visual for the highly anticipated Eisen Flügel anime film during their panel at Anime Expo. This latest reveal provides a fresh look at the adaptation of Gen Urobuchi’s acclaimed novels.
The Journey of Eisen Flügel to the Screen
The Eisen Flügel novel series, penned by Gen Urobuchi (known for Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Fate/Zero), was initially published in two volumes in 2009. The story later received a four-volume manga adaptation from Anno Nanakamado between 2016 and 2019. The concept for Eisen Flügel was originally intended as a film treatment nearly two decades ago, with Urobuchi remarking that it was always “destined to be” a feature film.
The anime film adaptation was first announced at Aniplex Online Fest 2022, where a teaser trailer and visual were released, confirming A-1 Pictures as the animation studio.
Key Staff and Narrative
The film is produced by A-1 Pictures, a studio renowned for its high-quality anime productions. Seiji Mizushima (known for Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 and Mobile Suit Gundam 00) serves as the chief director, with Daizen Komatsuda (assistant director for Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time) directing. The screenplay is handled by Seiji Mizushima and Yukie Sugawara (Sword Art Online).
Takashi Takeuchi (TYPE-MOON) provided the original character designs for the novels, with Keigo Sasaki adapting these designs for the film. The mechanical designs are by Kanetake Ebikawa (Gundam Build Fighters Try), Fumihiro Katagai, and Takayuki Yanase, while Tatsuya Yoshikawa (Devil May Cry 5 character designer) is responsible for the dragon designs. The evocative music for the film is composed by Yuki Kajiura (Puella Magi Madoka Magica).
Eisen Flügel is set in a world where dragons once dominated the skies. The narrative follows individuals with artificial wings who challenge these dragons in aerial duels to claim dominion over the sky. The story centers on Karl Schunitz, a test pilot of the “Blitz Vogel,” the world’s first jet-engine plane, as he prepares to challenge the fabled “Kaiser Drache,” a dragon rumored to possess glowing wings and light-speed capabilities, whose very existence is debated by researchers.
