Fans of the Black Clover anime have reason to celebrate, as a new season has been officially confirmed and is currently in production. This highly anticipated continuation comes after a hiatus of several years since the original anime concluded in March 2021.
The Long-Awaited Return
The Black Clover anime, which initially ran for 170 episodes from October 2017 to March 2021, went on hiatus primarily because it had caught up too closely with its source material, the Black Clover manga by Yūki Tabata. Studio Pierrot, the animation studio behind the series, opted to pause production rather than create filler content, a decision generally well-received by fans. This strategic pause allowed the manga to progress further, ensuring a richer pool of content for the anime’s return.
The confirmation of the new season, sometimes referred to as “Season 5” or a “sequel” series, was revealed at Anime Expo 2025 during Crunchyroll’s industry panel on July 5, 2025. Crunchyroll has also announced that it will exclusively stream the new season when it premieres.
What to Expect
While a specific release date for the new season has not yet been officially announced, industry reports speculate a potential return in late 2026 or early 2027. This timeline is based on typical production schedules for high-quality anime sequels, especially considering the expected episode count, likely around 24, and the studio’s aim for top-tier animation and storytelling.
The new season is expected to pick up directly where the previous one left off, continuing Asta’s journey. A new visual featuring Asta in his Devil Union form has been revealed, hinting at the intense developments to come from the Spade Kingdom Raid arc, which the anime will now cover. A promotional video showcasing refreshed character designs is also anticipated.
The Manga’s Continuation
In addition to the anime’s return, the Black Clover manga is also resuming with new chapters. Following a hiatus due to mangaka Yūki Tabata’s health concerns, the manga is set to release three new chapters in August 2025. The manga itself moved to Jump GIGA magazine in December 2023, aiming to provide Tabata with a healthier schedule.
Recent Black Clover Developments
Before the announcement of the new anime season, fans were treated to the Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King film. The movie, directed by Ayataka Tanemura and produced by Pierrot, premiered simultaneously in Japanese theaters and internationally on Netflix on June 16, 2023. The film’s events take place during a six-month gap within the manga’s storyline. The Blu-ray and DVD for the movie are set to be released on July 17, 2024.
