At a panel held during Japan Expo 2025 in Paris, Studio Khara officially announced new anime projects for Moyoco Anno’s beloved Sugar Sugar Rune series. The presentation focused on the unveiling of a short animated prequel film titled “SUGAR SUGAR RUNE Les deux sorcières,” which celebrates the manga’s 20th anniversary, and the confirmation of a full-fledged new anime adaptation.
The short film, directed by Yusuke Matsui, offers an original story supervised by Moyoco Anno, delving into the journey of Chocolat and Vanilla as they depart the magical world. This marks a significant return for the magical girl series, which originally ran as a manga from 2003 to 2007 in Kodansha’s Nakayoshi magazine and received its first anime adaptation in 2005.
While the Japan Expo panel primarily highlighted these new anime endeavors, there was no specific announcement regarding the manga returning to the U.S., Italy, or Taiwan with new printings or licensing agreements in 2026. Previous English releases of the Sugar Sugar Rune manga were handled by Del Rey Manga, with Udon Entertainment later acquiring the English rights and publishing a new volume in 2016. Discussions among fans have noted the lack of recent manga reprints in English.
The focus of the Japan Expo 2025 panel was squarely on expanding the Sugar Sugar Rune universe through new animation, bringing the enchanting world of Chocolat and Vanilla to a new generation of viewers.
