Tetsuhiro Koshita’s popular dodgeball manga, Honō no Tōkyūjo: Dodge Danko, is officially set to receive a television anime adaptation, slated to premiere in 2026. The announcement brings the sequel to the beloved Honō no Tōkyūji Dodge Danpei to the screen, focusing on a new generation of dodgeball players.
A New Era of Dodgeball Begins
Honō no Tōkyūjo: Dodge Danko continues the legacy of Koshita’s original work, which was serialized from 1989 to 1995 and previously inspired a 47-episode TV anime series that aired from 1991 to 1992. The sequel manga, Honō no Tōkyūjo: Dodge Danko, began its serialization on the Weekly CoroCoro Comic website in November 2022.
Unlike its predecessor, which centered on the character Danpei, the new anime will follow the adventures of Danpei’s daughter, Danko. The narrative will explore her journey and struggles as she endeavors to establish the strongest dodgeball team in the Reiwa era. A key visual released for the anime features Danko standing before her father’s tombstone, with the poignant text, “I’m off, Papa Danpei!”.
Manga’s Reception and Continuation
The Honō no Tōkyūjo: Dodge Danko manga has seen consistent releases, with Shogakukan publishing its fifth volume in Japan on January 28, and the sixth volume scheduled for release on August 28. The series has garnered attention since its inception, having been nominated for the Next Manga Award in the web manga category in 2023.
The upcoming anime adaptation is anticipated to bring the high-octane dodgeball action and heartwarming narrative of Danko’s quest to a wider audience, building upon the established popularity of the Dodge Danpei franchise.
