The Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket manga, penned by Hiroyuki Tamakoshi, has resumed its serialization with a planned three-chapter run. The latest chapter debuted in the August issue of Kadokawa’s Monthly Gundam Ace magazine on June 26, alongside the announcement of this short serialization.
The resumption comes after the manga had been on hiatus since December 2023, as mangaka Hiroyuki Tamakoshi focused on his health. Tamakoshi has been battling liver cancer, initially diagnosed with stage 3 cancer in September 2022. Despite undergoing chemotherapy, he stated that he has a prepared stock of three chapters that he wished to share with readers.
In a message published in the magazine, Tamakoshi expressed his commitment to the series, noting that he is drawing slowly while undergoing treatment and aims to resume regular serialization within the year. However, a subsequent update from Tamakoshi on June 28 revealed that cancer cells were again found in his liver, necessitating further chemotherapy. He affirmed his intention to continue working on his manuscripts as much as possible and will make further announcements when sufficient new material is ready.
The Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket manga, which launched in June 2021, offers a fresh perspective on the classic 1989 OVA series, retelling the narrative from the viewpoint of Christina “Chris” Mackenzie, one of the central characters alongside Alfred “Al” Izuruha and Bernard “Bernie” Wiseman. Kadokawa released the manga’s fourth compiled book volume in December 2023. The OVA itself is celebrated for its gritty tone and remains a highly acclaimed entry in the Gundam franchise.
