Venice, Italy – Renowned Japanese animation director Mamoru Hosoda’s latest feature film, “Scarlet” (Hateshinaki Scarlet), is set to have its world premiere in the Out of Competition section of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, running from August 27 to September 6. This marks a significant milestone for Hosoda, as it completes his presence at all three major international film festivals, having previously showcased “Summer Wars” at Berlin in 2010 and “Belle” at Cannes in 2021.
A New Chapter for a Visionary Director
Mamoru Hosoda, celebrated for his acclaimed works such as “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” and “Summer Wars,” continues to push the boundaries of animated storytelling with “Scarlet.” The selection of “Scarlet” for the Venice International Film Festival underscores its anticipated global appeal and artistic merit. The film is produced by Hosoda’s Studio Chizu, with co-production from Nippon TV and Sony Pictures, the latter also handling global distribution outside Japan.
Thematic Depth and Storyline
“Scarlet” delves into profound themes, with its core narrative revolving around “living” and a journey of vengeance. The story introduces Scarlet, a princess whose attempt to avenge her father’s murder fails, leading her to awaken in the “Land of the Dead”—a realm described as brimming with madness. In this surreal world, Scarlet faces a stark choice: succeed in her revenge against her nemesis and reach “The Endless Place,” or risk being reduced to “Emptiness” and ceasing to exist. This premise sets the stage for an “adventure beyond imagination” and a “never-ending struggle” as Scarlet navigates a world where reality is distorted.
Cast and Production Details
The film features a talented voice cast, with Mana Ashida lending her voice to the protagonist, Princess Scarlet. Masaki Okada voices Hijiri, a modern Japanese nurse who accompanies Scarlet on her journey. Other notable cast members include Koji Yakusho as Claudius, the central antagonist whose conspiracy drives Scarlet’s quest for vengeance, and Yutaka Matsushige as Cornelius, an influential aide. Kōtarō Yoshida portrays Voltemand, an aide leading the knights, while Masachika Ichimura voices Scarlet’s father, Amulet, and Yuki Saitō takes on the role of Gertrude, Scarlet’s mother.
Hosoda himself wrote and directed “Scarlet,” with Studio Chizu overseeing the production and planning.
Festival Circuit and Release Dates
Following its world premiere at Venice, “Scarlet” is also confirmed to have its North American premiere at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The Toronto screening will be part of the Special Presentations section, further cementing the film’s international presence.
“Scarlet” is scheduled for theatrical release in Japan on November 21, 2025, with a United States theatrical release slated for December 12, 2025. This strategic release schedule positions the film for potential awards consideration, drawing parallels to the successful rollout of Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron.”
Director’s Statement
Expressing his honor at the Venice invitation, Director Mamoru Hosoda shared his hopes for the film’s impact. “Now, as we witness tragic conflicts around the world, I would like to bring this new work to everyone in the world, believing that finding love and living hand in hand together will affirm our future,” Hosoda stated. His sentiment highlights the timely and universal message embedded within “Scarlet.”
