The Story of “Returners” and Latent Potential
The Petals of Reincarnation manga, written and illustrated by Mikihisa Konishi, began serialization in Mag Garden’s Monthly Comic Blade magazine in July 2014, later transferring to the Comic Blade website. The series has 21 published volumes and over 3 million copies in circulation. Mangamo has licensed the manga in English.
The narrative centers on Toya Senji, a seemingly talentless high school student who constantly feels inadequate. His life takes an unexpected turn when he encounters Haito, a Kendo champion who is revealed to be a “Returner.” Returners are individuals who can draw upon the abilities and talents of their past lives using the “Stem of Reincarnation.” However, this power comes with a significant cost: Haito must slit her own throat to activate it. Haito’s past life as the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi showcases the extraordinary potential unlocked by this phenomenon. Toya soon discovers that other Returners exist, some with grander and potentially dangerous ambitions for their unique talents. The anime will explore Toya’s journey as he is drawn into this world and confronts the implications of past lives influencing the present.
