Director Naoya Kurisu and the independent Japanese animation label Hand to Mouse. have revealed “Kinuginu no Hanayuki” (Frost Flowers After a Night of Frolicking), a new 3D CG-animated short film. The 15-minute film is set to premiere in Japan on October 17, 2025, with screenings also featuring a digitally remastered version of Kurisu and Hand to Mouse.’s previous work, “Sleep Tight My Baby, Cradled in the Sky” (Nemure Omoi Ko Sora no Shitone ni).
A Heian Era Ghost Story Reimagined in 3D CG
“Kinuginu no Hanayuki” is described as a romance ghost story, drawing inspiration from the ancient Japanese Konjaku Monogatari collection of Heian era tales. The narrative centers on Tokimasa, who, upon revisiting the home of a woman he once abandoned, discovers her lifeless body accompanied by an unsettling, eerie light. Fearing a dying curse from the woman, Tokimasa seeks the aid of Kamo no Tadayuki, an onmyōji exorcist, to confront the supernatural events unfolding.
The film’s exploration of a classic Japanese literary work through modern 3D CG animation promises a unique visual and storytelling experience, blending historical folklore with contemporary animation techniques.
Production Team and Voice Cast
Naoya Kurisu is not only directing the short film but is also credited with its scriptwriting, working with Hand to Mouse.. The sound design team includes Kawagen, who is composing the music; Isao Kajitani as the sound director; Eiji Hotta as the audio engineer; and Emi Takanashi handling the sound effects. Kurisu also previously contributed 3D model cooperation for the anime “Undead Murder Farce”.

Dual Audio Release Strategy

The theatrical release of “Kinuginu no Hanayuki” is paired with a digitally remastered version of “Sleep Tight My Baby, Cradled in the Sky”.
