Manga artist Soborou, widely known for the popular series Why the Hell are You Here, Teacher!?, is set to launch a brand-new manga titled Jukebox on August 23. The announcement was made by Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket service via X (formerly Twitter).
Soborou’s Return with Jukebox
The new series, Jukebox, marks a fresh venture for Soborou, whose previous work, Why the Hell are You Here, Teacher!? (Japanese: Nande Koko ni Sensei ga!?), garnered significant attention, including an anime adaptation. While details on the specific genre or premise of Jukebox are still emerging, the launch date of August 23 confirms its imminent arrival for fans. It will be available through Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket service, a digital platform for manga.
The Legacy of ‘Why the Hell are You Here, Teacher!?’
Soborou launched the erotic romantic comedy manga Why the Hell are You Here, Teacher!? in 2016. Prior to its serialization, the manga was published as a series of one-shots under the title Golden Times. Kodansha published the first compiled book volume in 2017, with the eleventh volume released in November 2020.
The series inspired a television anime that premiered in April 2019, followed by an OVA episode in December 2019. Sentai Filmworks licensed the anime for streaming on HIDIVE and Crunchyroll, also releasing an uncensored English dub on home video.
Previous Works and Hiatus
Soborou has also collaborated with writer Shigemitsu Harada on the Love and Peace manga, which concluded in October 2023. This duo launched Love and Peace in Kodansha’s Monthly Shonen Magazine in August 2022, and its third and final compiled book volume was published in December 2023.
Why the Hell are You Here, Teacher!? itself went on hiatus in August 2020 due to the author’s sudden illness. Soborou had previously disclosed experiencing medical issues such as hearing loss and tendonitis since the manga’s serialization began, taking breaks when these problems worsened. The manga resumed serialization in August 2024 after a four-year hiatus, before concluding in October 2024. BookWalker Global, in partnership with Kodansha USA Publishing, has been releasing the series digitally in English.
Fans eagerly await Soborou’s new direction with Jukebox, anticipating another compelling series from the acclaimed manga creator.
