Disney+ Japan has announced that popular voice actors Katsuyuki Konishi and Yōko Hikasa will join the cast of the upcoming Cat’s Eye anime, set to debut exclusively on the platform’s “Star” brand in Japan in September 2025. Konishi will voice Masato Kamiya, a new character appearing for the first time in the anime and reportedly serving as the model for City Hunter protagonist Ryo Saeba, while Hikasa will portray detective Mitsuko Asatani. The series is slated for a September 26 JST premiere.
Expanding the Voice Cast of Cat’s Eye
The addition of Katsuyuki Konishi and Yōko Hikasa brings further talent to the highly anticipated new adaptation of Tsukasa Hōjō’s classic manga. Konishi, known for roles such as Kamina in Gurren Lagann and Tengen Uzui in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, will lend his voice to Masato Kamiya, a freelance writer, marking a significant new character introduction for the anime. Yōko Hikasa, celebrated for her performances as Mio Akiyama in K-On! and Rias Gremory in High School DxD, takes on the role of Mitsuko Asatani, a detective.
They join the previously announced main cast members for the iconic Kisugi sisters: Mikako Komatsu as Hitomi Kisugi, Ami Koshimizu as Rui Kisugi, and Yumiri Hanamori as Ai Kisugi. Takuya Satō is cast as Toshio Utsumi, the detective who is also Hitomi’s fiancé, often pursuing the phantom thief group “Cat’s Eye” unaware of their true identities.
Production Details and Release Information
The new Cat’s Eye anime is being directed by Yoshifumi Sueda (High School DxD Hero) at LIDEN FILMS. Hayashi Mori (Sand Land: The Series) is handling the script, with Yosuke Yabumoto (The Legendary Hero is Dead!) responsible for character design and serving as chief animation director. The musical score is being composed by Yuki Hayashi (Haikyu!!, My Hero Academia).
The anime is scheduled for an exclusive streaming release on Disney+ in Japan in September 2025, specifically on the “Star” brand. While initially announced for Japan, a worldwide Disney+ release is likely given the platform’s increasing focus on anime content. Singer Ado will perform a cover of Anri’s “Cat’s Eye,” the memorable opening theme song from the original 1983 television anime.
The Legacy of Cat’s Eye
Tsukasa Hōjō’s Cat’s Eye manga, which ran from 1981 to 1985 in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump, centers on the three Kisugi sisters – Hitomi, Rui, and Ai – who operate a café by day and transform into a notorious art thief trio by night. Their motivation is to reclaim artwork that belonged to their long-missing father, Michael Heinz.
The manga inspired two successful television anime seasons by Tokyo Movie Shinsha in the 1980s. The first season aired from 1983 to 1984, followed by a second season from 1984 to 1985. The franchise has seen various adaptations and crossovers, including a Lupin the 3rd vs. Cat’s Eye crossover anime in 2023 and a French live-action TV series in 2024. The new anime arrives approximately 40 years after the original series concluded, signifying a resurgence for the beloved classic.
