Tokyo, Japan – The highly anticipated Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle – Part 1: Akaza Returns has maintained its dominant position at the Japanese box office, securing the No. 1 spot for its fifth consecutive weekend. Meanwhile, the latest installment in the beloved Crayon Shin-chan franchise, Eiga Crayon Shin-chan Cho Karei! Shakunetsu no Kasukabe Dancers, has seen a drop in its second weekend, moving from its debut position to No. 5.
Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Commands the Box Office
Since its release on July 18, 2025, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle – Part 1: Akaza Returns has been a box office powerhouse, consistently topping the charts. In its fifth weekend from August 15-17, the film garnered an impressive ¥1.875 billion (approximately US$12.67 million) from 1,218,000 admissions, showing only a slight dip of 2.23% from the previous weekend.
The cumulative success of the Infinity Castle film is remarkable. As of August 17/18, it has amassed a staggering ¥25.78 billion (about US$174.32 million) from 18.27 million tickets sold in just 31 days. This monumental performance has propelled it to become the fourth highest-grossing film of all time in Japan, surpassing Disney’s Frozen (¥25.5 billion) and Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name (¥25.17 billion). Among anime films specifically, Infinity Castle now stands as the third highest-grossing title, trailing only its predecessor Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train and Hayao Miyazaki’s classic Spirited Away. Its worldwide box office earnings have also exceeded $200 million.
This film is the inaugural part of a planned three-movie adaptation covering the climactic Infinity Castle arc from the original manga. Fans in North America can look forward to its release on September 12, distributed by Crunchyroll.
Crayon Shin-chan Drops in Rankings
In contrast to Demon Slayer‘s unwavering performance, the 2025 Crayon Shin-chan film, officially titled Eiga Crayon Shin-chan Cho Karei! Shakunetsu no Kasukabe Dancers (“Crayon Shin-chan the Movie: Super Hot! The Spicy Kasukabe Dancers”), experienced a slight decline in its second weekend. After debuting at No. 4 on August 8, 2025, the 32nd feature film in the long-running series dropped to the fifth spot.
Over its second weekend (August 15-17), the Crayon Shin-chan movie earned approximately 309 million yen (about US$2.09 million) from 246,000 admissions. Its cumulative gross over two weeks now stands at ¥1.3 billion (about US$8.79 million) with 1.06 million tickets sold. The film, unique for being the franchise’s “first dance entertainment movie” and taking place in India, aims to draw audiences with its fresh setting and theme.
