GKIDS has announced that it will bring a new 4K restoration of Satoshi Kon’s seminal psychological thriller, Perfect Blue, to U.S. cinemas starting October 3. The screenings offer fans a chance to experience the influential 1997 anime film in stunning high definition.
A Visionary’s Debut Returns to the Big Screen
The 4K restoration marks a significant event for cinephiles and anime enthusiasts, allowing them to witness Kon’s directorial feature debut with enhanced visual clarity. Perfect Blue first premiered in 1997 and established Satoshi Kon as a visionary filmmaker, preceding his other acclaimed works such as Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, Paranoia Agent, and Paprika. Kon tragically passed away in 2010.
The Enduring Legacy of Perfect Blue
Perfect Blue tells the gripping story of Mima Kirigoe, a pop idol who retires from her music career to pursue acting, only to find her reality blurring and her mental state deteriorating amidst stalking and psychological torment. The film is praised for its exploration of themes such as identity, celebrity culture, the blurring lines between fantasy and reality, and the dark side of obsessive fandom. Many critics and fans consider it an “existential masterpiece” that remains highly relevant today, particularly with the rise of social media and curated online personas. Its influence extends to live-action cinema, with some filmmakers drawing inspiration from its narrative and visual style.
GKIDS’ Role in Bringing Anime Classics to Audiences
GKIDS, an American film and television distributor owned by Toho International, is well-known for releasing international animated films and television series to North American audiences. They have a history of bringing critically acclaimed animation, including the Studio Ghibli library and works by directors like Makoto Shinkai, to a wider audience. GKIDS previously re-released a remastered version of Perfect Blue in 2018 and has consistently championed Satoshi Kon’s filmography, including a 4K restoration of Tokyo Godfathers. The company also plays a vital role in showcasing adult-oriented animation, despite its “GKIDS” moniker.
Previous Screenings and Home Releases
This isn’t the first time GKIDS has brought Perfect Blue to U.S. theaters. They partnered with Fathom Events in September 2018 for a two-day screening event across 500 U.S. theaters, which grossed over US$420,000. In September 2023, the film was also screened as part of Anime Expo’s AX Cinema Nights to celebrate its 25th anniversary. For home media, GKIDS and Shout! Factory released the film on Blu-ray and DVD in March 2019, followed by a steelbook edition in September 2021. A 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of the film’s 4K remaster is also anticipated for February 2025.
The upcoming October 3 theatrical release provides another opportunity for both devoted fans and newcomers to experience this psychological horror landmark in its newly restored glory.
