Aniplex has officially revealed an original television anime project titled “Inherit the Winds” (Kaze wo Tsugumono), based on the popular “Tachikawa Jinsuke” stage play quadrilogy. The announcement was made during the Aniplex Online Fest, accompanied by a teaser trailer and a motion visual for the upcoming series.
Adapting a Beloved Stage Play Series
The “Tachikawa Jinsuke” series is a collection of four historical stage plays, first performed by the theatre group Caramel Box in 1996. “Inherit the Winds” marks the first time this acclaimed quadrilogy will be adapted into an anime format. The original stories are set during the tumultuous Bakumatsu era, a period leading up to the Meiji Restoration in Japan. They follow the fictional Shinsengumi soldier Jinsuke Tachikawa as he navigates a rapidly changing Japan. The initial story, “Inherit the Winds,” introduces Tachikawa as he enters the war and confronts the consequences of the Kinmon Incident.
Key Staff and Production Details
The anime adaptation will see playwright Yutaka Narui, one of the original creators of the stage play, return to pen the script. Narui is credited with the original story in cooperation with Azuki Mashiba and Aniplex. Tomohiro Kawamura is set to direct the anime at Live2D Creative Studio and Drive Inc. Fumi Ebina is handling the character designs, while Shigeru Kishida will compose the music.

The narrative of “Inherit the Winds” begins in Kyoto during the Bakumatsu era, where a soldier, having lost his memories, is found and aided by the renowned Shinsengumi assistant officer, Sōji Okita. It is Okita who gives this soldier the name “Jinsuke Tachikawa.” Jinsuke then embarks on a new life among the Mibu soldiers, with the anime promising to portray the fleeting youth of these individuals who lived through such turbulent times, offering sharp detail and a fresh perspective.
