The popular “Matsurika Kanriden” fantasy romance light novel series, penned by Rinne Ishida and illustrated by Izumi, is officially receiving a television anime adaptation. Kadokawa announced the news on Wednesday, September 30, 2025, alongside the release of a special teaser promotional video and celebratory illustrations.
A Beloved Chinese-Style Cinderella Story Heads to the Screen
“Matsurika Kanriden,” known in Japan as 茉莉花官吏伝 and sometimes translated as “The Tale of the Scholar-Official Matsurika” or “The Legend of Bureaucrat Matsurika,” has garnered significant acclaim since its debut. The series is celebrated for its intricate blend of fantasy, romance, and imperial court intrigue, all set within a world inspired by Chinese history. With over 2 million copies in circulation, including digital editions, the franchise has cultivated a devoted fanbase eagerly awaiting its animated debut.
The Story of Matsurika: From Court Lady to Aspiring Official
The narrative centers on Matsurika, a court lady serving in the emperor’s inner palace who possesses an extraordinarily keen memory. Her quiet life takes an unexpected turn when she is asked to serve as a practice partner for a noble family’s marriage meeting. To her surprise, the “noble scion” turns out to be none other than Emperor Hakuyō himself.
Intrigued by her sharp mind and captivated by her charm, Emperor Hakuyō falls for Matsurika at first sight. Rather than simply wooing her, he presents her with a unique challenge: to pass the state’s rigorous scholar-official civil service exam, a path traditionally dominated by men. This premise sets the stage for a compelling “Chinese-style Cinderella story” that explores themes of social advancement, intelligence, and unexpected romance.
Light Novel and Manga Origins
Rinne Ishida first published the “Matsurika Kanriden” light novel series in July 2017 under Kadokawa’s B’s-LOG Bunko imprint, featuring captivating illustrations by Izumi. The series has continued to thrive, with the 17th volume shipping as recently as April 15.
Following the success of the novels, a manga adaptation, illustrated by Waka Takase, began serialization in Akita Shoten’s Monthly Princess magazine in 2018. Both Izumi and Waka Takase contributed new celebratory illustrations to mark the anime adaptation announcement.
Initial Anime Details and Author’s Gratitude
While a teaser promotional video has been released, specific details regarding the anime’s production, such as the animation studio, main cast, staff, or an official premiere date, have yet to be revealed.
Author Rinne Ishida shared a heartfelt comment expressing immense gratitude to everyone who supported the series, including Izumi for the novel illustrations, Waka Takase for the manga adaptation, Aoi Mito for another comic set in the same world, and particularly the dedicated readers. Ishida conveyed her excitement to see “Matsurika Kanriden” brought to life as an anime by a “wonderful and trustworthy staff,” encouraging fans to look forward to future announcements.
