A new compilation film for the beloved Gintama anime, titled Shin-Gekijōban Gintama: Yoshiwara Daienjō (Gintama New Film Version: Yoshiwara in Flames), is officially slated to open on February 13, 2026. The movie will revisit the fan-favorite “Yoshiwara in Flames” arc with a fully reanimated presentation, incorporating new animated scenes and characters not featured in the original television broadcast.
Reimagining a Classic Arc with New Animation
The Gintama: Yoshiwara in Flames compilation film will adapt episodes 139-146 of the original anime series, which first brought the dramatic arc to life. This cinematic rendition promises to enhance the experience with a full reanimation, offering a fresh visual take on the intense storyline. Fans can anticipate not only updated visuals but also additional animated sequences and the introduction of characters who were absent in the initial anime adaptation of the arc. The film will be presented in CinemaScope, boasting a 2.35:1 aspect ratio for a high-quality, visually impressive experience.
The Acclaimed Production Team
Leading the charge on this new Gintama film is director Naoya Ando, with Yōichi Fujita serving as supervising director. Taku Kishimoto is penning the script, while Shinji Takeuchi is responsible for character design and will act as chief animation director. The animation production is handled by BN Pictures, the studio behind previous Gintama anime and films. This team brings a wealth of experience from across the Gintama franchise and other notable anime projects.
Delving into the Yoshiwara in Flames Arc
The “Yoshiwara in Flames” arc is widely regarded by many fans as one of the Gintama series’ most compelling and serious storylines, marking a shift towards more plot-driven narratives. It plunges protagonist Gintoki Sakata and the Yorozuya into the dark, underground pleasure district of Yoshiwara, a city controlled by the formidable Housen, known as the “King of the Night.”
Key Characters and Conflict
The arc focuses on Gintoki’s fierce battle against Housen, a ruthless and cunning antagonist. This conflict tests Gintoki’s resolve and loyalty, introducing pivotal characters such as Tsukuyo, the leader of Yoshiwara’s vigilante Hyakka, and Seita, a young boy seeking his mother, Hinowa. The storyline is renowned for its emotional depth, high-stakes action, and exploration of themes like freedom, oppression, and the bonds between characters.
A Celebration of Two Decades of Gintama
The release of Shin-Gekijōban Gintama: Yoshiwara Daienjō is part of the ongoing Gintama franchise’s 20th-anniversary celebration. The original Gintama manga by Hideaki Sorachi debuted in 2003, and the television anime first premiered in 2006. The anniversary festivities have included various events and releases, demonstrating the enduring popularity of the series.
In addition to this new compilation film, the Gintama 20th-anniversary project has also seen 4DX screenings of previous films, Gintama: The Final (2013) and Gintama THE VERY FINAL (2021), in Japan. Several other “on Theater 2D” compilation films, such as Gintama on Theater 2D: Baragaki-hen and Gintama on Theater 2D: Ikkoku Keisei-hen, have also been released as limited engagements. The franchise also saw the premiere of the spin-off anime, 3rd Year Class Z Ginpachi-sensei, in October 2025.
This new film is poised to be a significant addition to the extensive Gintama universe, which already includes over seven hundred manga chapters, nine anime seasons, and multiple previous movies. Fans eagerly await the opportunity to experience the “Yoshiwara in Flames” arc like never before when the compilation film arrives in theaters on February 13, 2026.
