The superhero manga series Shy, penned and illustrated by Bukimi Miki, is set to conclude its serialization in Akita Publishing’s Weekly Shōnen Champion magazine in just three more chapters. The announcement came in the magazine’s 46th issue this year, bringing the popular series to its anticipated finale.
A Hero’s Journey Nears Its End
Shy has captivated readers since its serialization began in Weekly Shōnen Champion in August 2019, following a successful one-shot in January 2017. The manga introduces a world where super-powered individuals from various countries have emerged to prevent a third World War, ushering in an era of peace. Japan’s representative in this global hero lineup is Teru Momijiyama, a young girl who operates under the hero name “Shy” due to her profound shyness and social anxiety.
Despite her personal struggles, Shy is portrayed as a courageous and kind-hearted hero, dedicated to protecting Earth and maintaining global peace alongside other international heroes. Her primary adversaries are the supervillain group Amarariruku, led by the enigmatic Stigma. The series has explored Teru’s journey as she learns to navigate her severe shyness while confronting the daunting fears and uncertainties inherent in being a hero.
Manga’s Publication History and Milestones
Bukimi Miki’s Shy has been a consistent presence in Weekly Shōnen Champion. As of October 2025, the manga has been compiled into thirty-one tankōbon volumes. Yen Press has licensed the series for English release in North America, with the 11th English volume scheduled to ship on October 28. The manga has also been licensed in several European countries, including France, Germany, Spain, and Italy, since 2020.
The Road to the “Last Battle”
Prior to the announcement of its imminent conclusion, Shy had already entered its “last battle” arc, as revealed in the 41st issue of Weekly Shōnen Champion in September. This phase set the stage for the climactic events that will lead to the series’ conclusion in the upcoming chapters.
Anime Adaptations and Global Reach
The popularity of Shy extends beyond the manga pages, with an anime television series adaptation produced by Eight Bit. The first season aired from October to December 2023, and a second season followed from July to September 2024, covering the “Tokyo Recapture” arc. Both seasons have been streamed by Crunchyroll, which also offers an English dub for the series, making it accessible to a wider international audience.
The anime adaptation has further cemented Shy‘s place in the superhero genre, highlighting its unique premise of a timid hero striving for confidence while battling evil. The conclusion of the manga will undoubtedly be a significant event for its dedicated fanbase worldwide.
