The highly anticipated anime film adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s acclaimed sci-fi light novel, “All You Need Is Kill,” is slated to open in North American theaters on January 16, 2026. Distributor GKIDS announced the North American release date following the unveiling of the film’s main trailer and key visual.
The movie, produced by Warner Bros. Japan and animated by Studio 4°C, will first premiere in Japan on January 9, 2026, across ten theaters. GKIDS has also secured distribution rights for the film in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.
A New Look at a Familiar Time Loop
“All You Need Is Kill” centers on a soldier named Keiji Kiriya, who finds himself trapped in a relentless time loop. After dying in a battle against extraterrestrial invaders known as “Mimics,” Keiji is reborn each morning to fight and die again, endlessly reliving the same day. This unique premise allows him to hone his combat skills with each iteration. On his 158th loop, he encounters a mysterious and formidable ally, the female soldier known as the Full Metal Bitch, Rita Vrataski. The anime film promises a fresh perspective on this classic narrative, delving into Rita’s inner journey and struggles.
The film is directed by Kenichiro Akimoto, known for his work on projects like “Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko.” The creative team also includes Yuichiro Kido for the screenplay and Izumi Murakami for character designs. Akasaki performs the film’s theme song, “Tsuretette.”
From Novel to Big Screen: A Legacy of Adaptations
Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s original “All You Need Is Kill” light novel was first published in Japan in December 2004, gaining widespread praise for its groundbreaking “time loop” concept. Viz Media later released the English translation in July 2009.
The novel has inspired multiple adaptations prior to this anime film:
- Manga Adaptation: In 2014, a manga series illustrated by Takeshi Obata (known for Death Note) and storyboarded by Ryosuke Takeuchi was serialized in Japan and later released in English.
- Live-Action Film: Also in 2014, Hollywood released a live-action film titled “Edge of Tomorrow,” starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. This adaptation garnered significant box office success and critical acclaim.
