Konami and ADK Emotions have announced that the beloved Sazae-san anime franchise will be getting its first-ever arcade game, titled Sazae-san Machigai Sagashi (Sazae-san Spot the Difference), slated for release in spring 2026. This marks a significant new venture for the long-running series, a cultural cornerstone in Japan.
“Spot the Difference” Game Brings Sazae-san to Arcades
The upcoming arcade title, developed by Konami Arcade Games, will be a “spot the difference” game, inviting players to find discrepancies in scenes directly sourced from the actual Sazae-san anime broadcasts. This interactive experience aims to immerse fans in the familiar world of the Isono family. Players will be able to choose from three difficulty levels: “Easy,” “Normal,” and “Hard,” ensuring accessibility for a broad audience.
Gameplay Modes for All Ages
Sazae-san Machigai Sagashi is designed to appeal to both solo players and groups, featuring multiple gameplay modes:
- Single-Player Mode: Allows individuals to enjoy the “spot the difference” challenges at their own pace.
- Versus Mode: A two-player option where competitors can race against each other to find differences.
- Challenge Mode: Offers additional stages and prolonged play for those seeking a deeper experience.
Public Preview and Exhibition
Ahead of its official launch, Konami is giving the public a chance to experience the game. A location test for Sazae-san Machigai Sagashi is currently underway at Round One Stadium Ario Kashiwa until October 26, 2025. Furthermore, the game is scheduled to be showcased at the “AMUSEMENT EXPO 2025,” which will take place on November 14 and 15, offering more enthusiasts an opportunity for a sneak peek. Attendees who try the game at the expo will receive an original Sazae-san Machigai Sagashi sticker.
The Enduring Legacy of Sazae-san
The decision to create an arcade game highlights the enduring popularity and cultural significance of Sazae-san. Based on the yonkoma (four-panel) manga series by Machiko Hasegawa, which began serialization in 1946, the anime first premiered in October 1969. It has since become a Japanese television institution, recognized by Guinness World Records as the “Longest running animated TV series” globally.
Celebrating its 55th anniversary in October 2024, Sazae-san continues to air new episodes and remains a beloved classic, especially among family-oriented audiences in Japan. The show depicts the everyday life of Sazae Fuguta and her multi-generational family, offering heartwarming and humorous slice-of-life narratives that reflect traditional Japanese family values. Despite its immense national renown, the series has not received as much attention overseas, partly due to its creators’ wishes and its portrayal of a more traditional, nostalgic era of Japan. However, its consistent high ratings and longevity underscore its deep connection with the Japanese populace across generations.
