The Haunting Premise of “Dark Gathering”
The “Dark Gathering” anime adapts Kenichi Kondo’s manga, which began serialization in Shueisha’s Jump Square magazine in March 2019 and has accumulated 18 volumes as of August 2025. The series delves into the world of college student Keitaro Gentoga, who possesses a cursed ability to attract spirits. After a traumatic spiritual encounter that also affected his childhood friend Eiko, Keitaro attempts to become a shut-in, fearing his spiritual magnet tendencies.
His life takes an unexpected turn when he accepts a tutoring job for Eiko’s brilliant, occult-obsessed cousin, Yayoi Hozuki. Yayoi, who can clearly see ghosts, is on a determined quest to capture powerful malevolent spirits to find the entity responsible for stealing her mother’s soul. Reluctantly, Keitaro is drawn into Yayoi’s dangerous ghost-hunting adventures, confronting his own fears and trauma as they encounter grotesque supernatural phenomena. The first season covered approximately 35 chapters of the manga, leaving ample source material for future animated content.
The anime has been praised for its unique approach to horror, unsettling monster designs, and compelling character dynamics, establishing itself as a standout in the horror anime genre. Its continuation has been eagerly anticipated by a growing fanbase.
