Chainsaw Man’s Continued Reign
Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, based on the popular “Reze Arc” from Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga, has proven to be a global phenomenon. In its sixth weekend in Japanese theaters (October 24-26), the film sold an additional 254,000 tickets, earning 399,302,600 yen (approximately US$2.62 million). The film, directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara and produced by MAPPA, initially opened at #1 in Japan, replacing Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle – Akaza Sairai, which had held the top spot for nine consecutive weeks.
Global Box Office Success
Beyond Japan, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has also achieved significant international success. Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) acquired the worldwide theatrical rights, leading to a successful North American debut on October 24. The film opened in North America with an estimated $17.25 million across 3,003 locations, far exceeding initial projections. This strong performance allowed it to claim the #1 spot in North America, surpassing other new releases like Regretting You and Black Phone 2.
Globally, the film has now grossed an estimated US$108 million, with US$60.4 million coming from Sony-distributed regions. Its worldwide cumulative total has now surpassed US$100 million, positioning it as the 27th highest-grossing anime film of all time worldwide. Analysts like David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research have noted that anime is “doing well everywhere now, including in Europe and Latin America,” highlighting the global reach of Chainsaw Man‘s success. The film also performed well in countries like the UK, Germany, and Australia.
Audience reception has been overwhelmingly positive, with the film earning an “A” CinemaScore from viewers in the U.S., a 99% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 5-star PostTrak rating.
Zombie Land Saga Film Enters the Race
Making its debut at the #8 spot in the Japanese box office is ZOMBIE LAND SAGA: Yumeginga Paradise. The film opened on October 24 JST across 127 locations.
Background of Zombie Land Saga
ZOMBIE LAND SAGA: Yumeginga Paradise is a follow-up to the popular Zombie Land Saga anime television series, which first aired in 2018, with a second season, Zombie Land Saga Revenge, following in 2021. The series, produced by MAPPA, Avex Pictures, and Cygames, centers on a group of girls resurrected as zombie idols. This new film installment sees the cast facing an alien invasion and includes Tae Yamada regaining her intelligence. An early screening of the film was held on September 28 JST at Shinjuku Wald 9.
The opening of ZOMBIE LAND SAGA: Yumeginga Paradise marks a notable addition to the animated film landscape, further diversifying the anime offerings in theaters. Its #8 debut indicates a dedicated fanbase, though it faces stiff competition from established titans like Chainsaw Man. Anime films continue to demonstrate significant drawing power at the global box office, solidifying their position as a major force in the entertainment industry.
