Anime streaming giant Crunchyroll announced on Thursday that it has added the original 1984 television anime series Fist of the North Star (also known as Hokuto no Ken) and its sequel, Fist of the North Star 2, to its streaming library. All 152 episodes are now available to stream in Japanese with English subtitles. This addition allows fans to revisit the iconic post-apocalyptic martial arts saga or introduce a new generation to the influential series.
A Legendary Return to the Wasteland
Fist of the North Star is based on the landmark manga written by Buronson and illustrated by Tetsuo Hara, which was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 1983 to 1988. The anime adaptation, produced by Toei Animation, originally aired in Japan from 1984 to 1988. The first series comprised 109 episodes, while its sequel, Hokuto no Ken 2, which sees the main characters having grown up, added another 43 episodes. The full collection of 152 episodes marks a significant addition for Crunchyroll.
The Story of Kenshiro
The series is set in a brutal, post-apocalyptic world where a nuclear inferno has decimated civilization, leaving behind a barren wasteland where violence reigns supreme. The story follows Kenshiro, a master of the deadly martial art Hokuto Shinken, as he wanders the desolate landscape. Kenshiro uses his formidable skills, which involve striking vital pressure points to cause opponents to explode, to protect the innocent and weak from ruthless thugs and other martial arts masters. His quest often involves confronting powerful rivals, including his “brother” Raoh, who seeks to conquer the new world.
The Enduring Legacy of Fist of the North Star
Fist of the North Star has left an indelible mark on popular culture, influencing countless manga, anime, and other media. Its protagonist, Kenshiro, and his catchphrase, “You are already dead,” have become iconic. The series is credited with helping to define the post-apocalyptic martial arts genre and remains a significant piece of anime history.
Cultural Impact and Future Projects
Beyond the original anime, the Fist of the North Star manga has inspired numerous other television anime, films, and spinoffs. In fact, a new CG-based anime adaptation, Hokuto no Ken -Fist of the North Star-, is scheduled to premiere in 2026, commemorating the series’ 40th anniversary. This new project aims to be more faithful to the original manga. The timing of Crunchyroll’s acquisition is particularly significant as anticipation builds for this upcoming adaptation, offering both long-time fans and newcomers an opportunity to experience the foundational work.
The addition of Fist of the North Star to Crunchyroll’s catalog reinforces its commitment to providing a diverse range of anime, including classic and influential titles, to its global audience.
