Chainsaw Man’s Unprecedented Reign Continues
Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, a direct sequel to the first season of the acclaimed anime series, premiered in Japan on September 19, 2025. The film, produced by MAPPA and directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara, has shown remarkable staying power since its release.
As of November 2-3, 2025, the film had accumulated over 7.9 billion yen (approximately US$52.09 million) from the sale of 5.21 million tickets in Japan. This robust performance has propelled it to become the 91st highest-grossing film ever released in Japan. Globally, the film’s success is even more pronounced, with estimated worldwide earnings reaching between $139 million and $141 million, securing its place as the 20th highest-grossing Japanese film of all time worldwide. The film also achieved a significant milestone by topping the North American box office for at least one weekend.
The consistent success of Reze Arc underscores the immense popularity of the Chainsaw Man franchise and the strong appeal of its theatrical adaptation. Its seven-week run at the top is a testament to strong audience engagement and positive word-of-mouth.
“Sumikko Gurashi” Explores the Sky Kingdom in Fourth Film
Opening on October 31, 2025, the fourth anime feature film for the beloved Sumikko Gurashi characters, titled Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Sora no Ōkoku to Futari no Ko, debuted at #4 in the Japanese box office rankings. Directed by Naomi Iwata and produced by Fanworks, the film tells the story of the Sumikko characters encountering a prince from the Sky Kingdom and embarking on an adventure to help his kingdom facing a water shortage.
In its opening three-day weekend (October 31 to November 2), the film garnered 184 million yen (approximately US$1.2 million) from 150,000 admissions. Including a national holiday on November 3, its four-day total reached 253 million yen (approximately US$1.64 million) with 208,000 tickets sold. While a solid debut, this initial three-day gross was approximately 75.7% of the third Sumikko Gurashi film, Sumikko Gurashi The Movie: The Mysterious Child of the Patchwork Factory, which was released in November 2023.
The Sumikko Gurashi franchise, known for its endearing and slightly negative characters who prefer to stay in corners, has consistently performed well with its theatrical releases. This fourth film continues the tradition of bringing new adventures to its dedicated fanbase.
