The official X (formerly Twitter) account for Kenichi Tachibana and Yū Sasuga’s Terra Formars manga has announced that the series is still planning to resume from its current hiatus before the end of 2025. This latest update comes after previous delays, with the manga initially slated for a summer return, then pushed to fall, and now confirmed to be targeting a release within the current year.
The Journey Through Hiatuses and Returns
Terra Formars, a popular science fiction horror series, has experienced a series of interruptions throughout its serialization. The manga first launched in Shueisha’s Miracle Jump in January 2011 before moving to Weekly Young Jump in April 2012. Its narrative follows humanity’s desperate struggle against mutated humanoid cockroaches on Mars, a consequence of a terraforming project, as they battle to save Earth from a mysterious virus.
Past Pauses and Health Concerns
The series entered a significant hiatus in late 2018, primarily due to writer Yu Sasuga’s health issues. This extended break lasted for over five years before the manga made a highly anticipated return in the 18th issue of Weekly Young Jump on April 4, 2024. Prior to this, an earlier hiatus occurred from March 2017 to April 2018, also attributed to Sasuga’s health.
The Latest Interruption and Upcoming Resumption
After its return in April 2024, the manga once again went on hiatus on April 10, 2025. This most recent break was initially projected to conclude in the summer, then shifted to the fall, and is now confirmed to be aiming for a resumption sometime before the end of the current year. Illustrator Kenichi Tachibana had previously stated in August 2021 that the manga would resume once Sasuga’s health had improved.
Manga Volumes and International Release
As of July 2024, Terra Formars has collected 23 tankōbon volumes in Japan. In North America, Viz Media holds the license for the English release of the manga, having shipped the 22nd volume in December 2019 and planning to release the 23rd volume on November 18.
Anime Adaptations and Other Media
The popularity of Terra Formars extends beyond the manga. The series has inspired multiple adaptations, including:
- Anime Television Series: A 13-episode anime adapting the Annex 1 arc premiered in September 2014, followed by a second season, Terra Formars Revenge, which aired in April 2016. Both seasons were streamed by Crunchyroll as they aired in Japan.
- Original Video Animations (OVAs): A two-episode OVA series, adapting the Bugs 2 arc, was released in 2014 and bundled with the manga’s 10th and 11th volumes. A separate Terra Formars: Chikyū-hen OVA shipped with volumes 21 and 22 in August and November 2018.
- Live-Action Film: A live-action film adaptation of the manga, directed by Takashi Miike, opened in Japan in April 2016.
Fans eagerly await the return of Terra Formars as the creators continue to navigate health challenges to bring the captivating story to its conclusion.
