New “Light Anime” Adaptation to Arrive in January 2026
The new adaptation of Hiroto Ida’s popular comedy manga, You Don’t Know Gunma Yet, is slated to begin broadcasting in January 2026. This iteration is specifically designated as a “light anime,” a format spearheaded by DNP aiming to streamline animation production with lower costs and quicker turnaround times compared to traditional methods. The animation production for You Don’t Know Gunma Yet: Reiwa Version is being handled by Imagica Infos and Imageworks Studio. Tetsuya Tatamitani is directing the series and also serving as screenwriter, with Emi Saito and Kohei Nakayama joining as scriptwriters.
Reprising Voice Actors and Production Details
Fans will be pleased to know that Gakuto Kajiwara will return to voice the protagonist Nori Kamitsuki, while Jun Kasama will reprise his role as Otoya Todoroki. The anime will debut on SKY PerfecTV!’s Tetsudō Channel, bringing the comedic exploration of Gunma Prefecture to a new audience.
The Enduring Appeal of Gunma Prefecture
Hiroto Ida’s original manga, Omae wa Mada Gunma o Shiranai, was serialized on Shinchosha’s Kurage Bunch website from October 2013 to May 2019, culminating in eleven tankōbon volumes. The series humorously depicts the culture shock experienced by Nori Kamitsuki, a high school student who moves from Chiba Prefecture to Gunma Prefecture. Prior to his move, Kamitsuki only encounters terrifying online rumors about Gunma, which is often humorously portrayed as a mysterious and even hostile, unexplored territory. The narrative follows his encounters with locals who possess an intense love for Gunma’s unique culture, often highlighting the exaggerated stereotypes and local pride associated with the prefecture.
Previous Adaptations of the Series
The upcoming light anime is not the first adaptation of Ida’s popular work. The manga previously inspired a four-episode live-action television series which aired in March 2017, followed by a live-action film adaptation released in July 2017. An earlier anime television series, consisting of twelve short episodes, premiered in April 2018. That series was streamed by Crunchyroll, allowing international audiences to enjoy the comedic take on Gunma’s distinct characteristics.
