The Saga of Tanya the Evil, known in Japan as Youjo Senki, originated as a light novel series written by Carlo Zen and illustrated by Shinobu Shinotsuki. It began online serialization in 2010 before being acquired by Enterbrain in 2013, with fourteen volumes published as of September 2023. A manga adaptation with art by Chika Tōjō also began serialization in 2016.
The first television anime season premiered in January 2017, consisting of 12 episodes. This was followed by a theatrical film, Saga of Tanya the Evil: The Movie, which served as a direct sequel to the first season and premiered in February 2019.
