Fans of the heartwarming fantasy adventure The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash (Saijaku Teimā wa Gomihiroi no Tabi o Hajimemashita) can rejoice, as a second season for the anime adaptation has officially been announced. The news confirms the continuation of Ivy and Sora’s journey, though specific details regarding the release date and production staff for the new season are yet to be revealed.
A Journey of Survival and Friendship Continues
The announcement of a second season comes after the successful broadcast of the first season, which aired for 12 episodes from January to March 2024. The anime adaptation, produced by Studio Massket, quickly garnered a following for its unique premise and endearing characters.
The Story So Far: Ivy and Sora’s Unlikely Bond
The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash introduces viewers to Ivy, a young girl reborn into a world where an individual’s skills and status are determined by “stars.” Tragically, Ivy is born starless, leading to her abandonment and persecution by her own family and village, who consider her an ill omen.
Forced to survive on her own, Ivy takes refuge in a forest, learning to scavenge and live off the land. Her lonely existence changes when she encounters Sora, a weak, dying slime – the weakest monster imaginable. Despite Sora’s frail nature, Ivy manages to tame it, forming an unbreakable bond with her new familiar. Together, this delicate duo embarks on a journey, collecting discarded items to sustain themselves, all while discovering the hidden potential within Ivy and her unique taming abilities. Their travels also lead them to befriend Ciel, a powerful adandala resembling a black panther, further expanding their adventuring party.
Critical Reception and Fan Engagement
The first season was well-received by audiences, many praising its wholesome narrative, the charming relationship between Ivy and Sora, and its fresh take on the isekai genre. Crunchyroll streamed the first season, making it accessible to a global audience.
The Source Material: Light Novel and Manga Success
The anime is based on the popular Japanese light novel series written by Honobonoru500 and illustrated by Nama. The series originated as a web novel on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō website in August 2018, before being acquired by TO Books for light novel publication in November 2019. As of June 2025, the light novel series has accumulated fourteen volumes.
A manga adaptation, illustrated by Tou Fukino, also began serialization on TO Books’ Comic Corona website in February 2020 and has seven volumes as of January 2025. Both the light novel and manga are licensed in North America by Seven Seas Entertainment.
What to Expect from Season 2
While specific plot details for the second season are currently under wraps, fans can anticipate the continuation of Ivy and Sora’s journey as they explore more of their world, encounter new challenges, and potentially uncover more about Ivy’s “starless” skill, which is hinted to be far more powerful than initially perceived. The continuation will likely delve deeper into the themes of survival, found family, and overcoming adversity, which were central to the first season.
Further announcements regarding the production team, cast, and a release window are expected in the future, as the production of the second season progresses.
