Fans of Mine Yoshizaki’s beloved Sgt. Frog (Keroro Gunsō) manga are set to welcome an all-new television anime series, titled Kerokero Gunsō ☆, which is slated to premiere in Fall 2026. This fresh adaptation will notably feature a completely brand-new cast, marking a significant change for the long-running franchise.
The announcement comes as part of a larger 20th-anniversary celebration for the Sgt. Frog anime, which originally debuted in 2004. Alongside the new TV series, the anniversary project also includes a new anime film and a musical, making 2026 a monumental year for the Keronian invasion force.
A Fresh Take with a Brand-New Cast
One of the most surprising details of the Kerokero Gunsō ☆ TV anime is the decision to introduce a brand-new voice cast. This contrasts with the upcoming anime film, Shin Gekijouban☆Keroro Gunso Fukatsushite Sokko Chikyu Metsubo no Kiki de arimasu!, which will see the five original voice cast members reprise their iconic roles. The new casting for the TV series suggests a distinct artistic direction, aiming to bring a fresh interpretation to Sergeant Keroro and his eccentric platoon as they continue their perpetual, yet often stalled, mission to conquer Pekopon (Earth).
The Broader 20th Anniversary Celebration
The Fall 2026 TV anime is just one facet of an ambitious celebration commemorating two decades since the original Sgt. Frog anime first aired.
New Anime Film Landing Summer 2026
Prior to the TV series, a new theatrical anime film, officially titled Shin Gekijouban☆Keroro Gunso Fukatsushite Sokko Chikyu Metsubo no Kiki de arimasu!, is scheduled for release in Summer 2026. This movie marks the franchise’s first theatrical release in 16 years, with the last film having premiered in 2010. Yuichi Fukuda, known for his work on live-action adaptations like Gintama, is serving as both screenwriter and chief director for the film, with Fumitoshi Oizaki as director and Satoshi Koike as character designer. BN Pictures is handling the animation production.
As part of the film’s promotion, singer and media personality Ano has been appointed as the official campaign ambassador and performs a new theme song, “Mata Kaette Kita Kero! to March,” with comedian Soshina.
Pekopon Shinryaku Musical in September 2026
Adding to the anniversary festivities, a Pekopon Shinryaku Musical “Keroro Gunso” is also set to open in September 2026. This multi-platform approach underscores the enduring popularity of the Sgt. Frog franchise across different entertainment mediums.
A Legacy of Froggy Fun
The Sgt. Frog franchise originated from Mine Yoshizaki’s sci-fi comedy manga, which began serialization in Kadokawa’s Monthly Shonen Ace magazine in 1999. The story follows Sergeant Keroro, the bumbling leader of a platoon of frog-like aliens from the planet Keron, whose mission to invade Earth is repeatedly derailed by their own incompetence and their interactions with the human Hinata family.
The original anime television series, produced by Sunrise, captivated audiences for 358 episodes, running from April 2004 to April 2011. Following this, a shorter 24-episode anime series titled Keroro aired in 2014. The series has also inspired numerous anime movies and has been distributed globally, with English dubs released by Animax Asia and Funimation. Discotek Media currently licenses the television anime series in North America.
With a new TV anime, a feature film, and a musical on the horizon, Sgt. Frog is poised for a significant resurgence, promising both nostalgic returns and fresh experiences for its dedicated fanbase in 2026.
