Tsugaru Toba’s manga adaptation of Midori Yūma and Laruha’s popular light novel series, Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits (Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi), is set to publish its final chapter in January. The conclusion will appear in the February issue of Kodansha’s Monthly Shōnen Sirius magazine, specifically on January 26, 2026. The 11th and final compiled book volume of the series is scheduled to ship on February 27, 2026.
The Journey of Aoi Tsubaki Comes to a Close
The manga, which began its serialization in Monthly Shōnen Sirius in January 2023, follows the supernatural culinary adventures of Aoi Tsubaki. Aoi, a college student with the inherited ability to see ayakashi (spirits), finds her life upended when she is whisked away to the Hidden Realm, a world inhabited by these spirits. There, an ogre named Odanna, who is the master of the prestigious Tenjin-ya inn, claims her as his bride to settle a debt incurred by her late grandfather. Refusing the marriage, Aoi instead negotiates to work at the Tenjin-ya, using her exceptional cooking skills to pay off the debt and forge her own path in the spirit world.
A Multi-Faceted Franchise
Origin in Light Novels
Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits originated as a light novel series written by Midori Yūma and illustrated by Laruha. Fujimi Shobo began publishing the series under their Fujimi L Bunko imprint in April 2015, concluding with twelve volumes in March 2022.
Multiple Manga Adaptations
It’s important to note that Tsugaru Toba’s manga is the second adaptation of the Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits light novels. An earlier manga adaptation, with art by Waco Ioka, has been serialized in Enterbrain’s B’s Log Comic magazine since April 2016. Viz Media has licensed and is releasing Waco Ioka’s adaptation in English. Tsugaru Toba’s version, published by Kodansha, offers a distinct artistic interpretation and pacing of the beloved story.
Anime Adaptation and Upcoming Season
The series also garnered significant attention through its anime television series adaptation. The first 26-episode season, produced by Gonzo, aired from April to September 2018. Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired, and Funimation released an English dub and home video version. Fans of the anime can look forward to a second season, which was announced in May 2024 and is scheduled to premiere in October 2025. Crunchyroll will also stream the second season.
The conclusion of Tsugaru Toba’s manga adaptation marks an end to one iteration of Aoi’s enchanting tale, but the Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits franchise continues to thrive across its original light novels, the other manga adaptation, and the highly anticipated second anime season.
