The popular manga series, The Girl, the Shovel, and the Evil Eye (Yōjo to Scoop to Maganō), by author Chouchouhassha and artist Kayatamaru, officially resumed serialization on December 25 after a hiatus. The series, published on the Suiyōbi no Sirius service on Niconico Manga, is set to conclude in just three more chapters, with its fifth and final compiled volume slated for release on February 9.
A Brief Return Before the Final Dig
Fans of the dark fantasy isekai series can look forward to a swift resolution as the manga enters its final arc. The resumption on December 25 was met with anticipation, though the announcement of its impending conclusion simultaneously marks the end of Tsuguto Sumihara’s journey. The final three chapters will bring to a close the narrative that began in April 2020 when Kayatamaru launched the manga.
The Road to Conclusion: Final Volume Details
The fifth and concluding volume of The Girl, the Shovel, and the Evil Eye will be available for purchase on February 9. This final volume will encapsulate the remaining chapters, offering readers the complete story in print. Kodansha USA Publishing, which licensed the manga in 2021, has been releasing the series digitally, with the fourth volume having been released in February 2023.
Understanding ‘The Girl, the Shovel, and the Evil Eye’
The manga tells the story of Tsuguto Sumihara, a protagonist described as “way too nice.” His life takes a dark turn when he dies in a bus accident after being bullied into giving up his seat. However, his story doesn’t end there; he is reincarnated into a harsh mining camp located at the base of an impossibly tall tower.
Tsuguto’s Reincarnation and Powers
In this new and bizarre land, Tsuguto befriends Loulier, a ram-horned girl. When Loulier faces bullying, Tsuguto discovers that his reincarnation was not without purpose, as he awakens powers—specifically, “The Accursed Evil Eye.” The series explores his journey to forge a future in this strange world, with Loulier by his side, leveraging his newfound abilities to navigate the challenges he faces. The manga is an adaptation of Chouchouhassha’s original novel series, illustrated by chibi, which began serialization on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō website in January 2018.
