Junya Inoue, the acclaimed creator behind the popular manga Btooom!, has officially announced that his ongoing series, Kaijū Jieitai: Task Force for Paranormal Disaster Management, is now entering its climactic final arc. The announcement was made by Inoue himself, signaling the beginning of the end for the monster-hunting saga that began serialization in 2020.
The Road to the Final Arc
Kaijū Jieitai, also known by its English title Task Force for Paranormal Disaster Management or simply Monster Self-Defense Force, debuted in Shinchosha’s Monthly Comic @Bunch magazine in May 2020, following a 54-page prologue chapter released in April of the same year. The manga moved to Monthly Comic @Bunch‘s digital counterpart, Comic Bunch Kai, in April 2024, continuing its publication online. Shinchosha published the manga’s 21st compiled book volume in December 2025, with the latest chapter, the 69th, having launched recently.
The series is a collaborative effort, with Studio Hisekutta and Seiichi Shirato credited alongside Inoue for their work on the manga. Shirato is specifically noted as a history and military specialist, contributing to the “mega-realistic monster-busting story”.
The Premise of Kaijū Jieitai
The manga plunges readers into a world grappling with a global survival battle against monstrous threats. The story kicks off following a massive tsunami in the Pacific Ocean, caused by an undersea landslide, which marks the arrival of formidable kaiju. The narrative focuses on a “hyper-realistic monster search-and-destroy operation,” as humanity must fight for peace without the aid of traditional heroes.
At its core, Kaijū Jieitai follows the officers of the Japanese Self-Defense Force (JSDF), Yoshikazu Yamato and Konoe Sakimori, as they confront these mysterious monsters that plague the East Asian sea’s troubled waters and prey on humans. The series is categorized under genres like action, drama, and thriller, with prominent themes of kaiju, military, monsters, and survival, appealing to a seinen demographic.
