Tokyo, Japan – Gege Akutami’s globally acclaimed Jujutsu Kaisen manga franchise has officially surpassed an astounding 150 million copies in worldwide circulation, including digital editions and related novels, as announced on December 20, 2025. This significant milestone solidifies the dark fantasy series’ position as one of the best-selling manga of all time, despite the main serialization having concluded in September 2024.
The announcement highlights the enduring and expanding global popularity of Jujutsu Kaisen, which has seen a remarkable increase of 50 million copies in circulation in just over a year since reaching the 100 million mark in September 2024.
The Phenomenal Rise of Jujutsu Kaisen
Jujutsu Kaisen, which began its serialization in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump in March 2018, quickly captivated readers with its compelling narrative of high school student Yuji Itadori, who becomes entangled in a supernatural world of curses after swallowing a cursed object. The series’ unique blend of dark fantasy, intense action, and memorable characters has resonated deeply with a diverse international audience.
A Rapid Ascent to the Top Tier
The manga’s growth trajectory has been exceptionally rapid. It achieved 10 million copies in circulation by October 2020 and 15 million by December 2020, experiencing a 400% increase in just one year. By December 2021, the number rose to over 60 million, and by September 2024, it hit the 100 million mark, coinciding with the publication of its final chapter. The latest leap to 150 million copies in December 2025 underscores the franchise’s sustained momentum even after its main story’s conclusion.
Anime’s Role in Amplifying Global Reach
A significant driver of the manga’s explosive success has been its critically acclaimed anime adaptation by studio MAPPA. The first season of the TV anime aired from October 2020 to March 2021, instantly broadening the series’ appeal worldwide.
Cinematic Success and Continuing Adaptation
The Jujutsu Kaisen 0 prequel film, released in December 2021, was a massive box office hit, earning 26.5 billion yen worldwide. The second anime season, covering the “Hidden Inventory / Premature Death” and “Shibuya Incident” arcs, aired from July to December 2023. Fans are eagerly anticipating the third season, which will adapt the “Culling Game” arc and is scheduled to premiere in January 2026. Original creator Gege Akutami himself praised Director Shota Goshozono and the production staff for their incredible work in maintaining the anime’s high quality.
Beyond the Main Series: Expanding the Jujutsu Kaisen Universe
The Jujutsu Kaisen universe continues to expand with new content, further fueling reader interest. In September 2025, Akutami, alongside manga artist Yūji Iwasaki, launched a short-term spin-off series titled Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo. The first volume of this new series is set to release on January 5, 2026. This ongoing expansion, coupled with upcoming anime releases and related merchandise, ensures the franchise remains vibrant and relevant for both long-time fans and new audiences.
Joining the Ranks of Manga Titans
The 150 million copies milestone places Jujutsu Kaisen among the elite best-selling manga series globally, standing alongside long-running giants like One Piece, Dragon Ball, and My Hero Academia. This rapid climb to the top tier highlights how contemporary manga, bolstered by strong anime adaptations and efficient global distribution, can achieve historic sales figures at a pace previously unseen. A representative for the publisher noted that “even after the conclusion of its six-and-a-half-year serialization, it continues to ignite enthusiasm around the world.”
