The anime is based on the popular light novel series A Livid Lady’s Guide to Getting Even: How I Crushed My Homeland with My Mighty Grimoires, written by Metabo Hagure and illustrated by Masami. The series originated as a web novel on Shōsetsuka ni Narō in October 2020 before being published as a light novel by Hobby Japan’s HJ Novels imprint starting in May 2022. A manga adaptation by Imo Ōno also began serialization in May 2022.
J-Novel Club, which publishes the English version of the light novel and manga, describes the plot as follows: Elizabeth Leiston, once the epitome of a refined noble lady and prospective queen, finds her life shattered when her fiancé publicly breaks their engagement, imprisons her, and spreads malicious rumors.
