Veteran voice actors Akeno Watanabe and Yasuhiro Kikuchi have been announced as joining the cast of the newly premiered anime series, Plus-Sized Misadventures in Love (Japanese title: Debu to Love to Ayamachi to!). The duo will lend their voices to the roles of protagonist Yumeko Kōda’s mother and father, respectively. The anime officially debuted on October 6, 2025, on Tokyo MX and other networks, with Crunchyroll streaming the series.
The announcement was made via the anime’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, confirming the addition of these experienced voice talents to the romantic comedy.
Diving into ‘Plus-Sized Misadventures in Love’
The anime is based on the popular manga series by mamakari, which began serialization on NTT Solmare’s digital magazine Koisuru Soirée in September 2019. The story centers on Yumeko Kōda, a quiet, downcast office worker burdened by deep insecurities and self-loathing. Her life takes an unexpected turn after a sudden accident leaves her with amnesia and a dramatically altered, hyper-positive personality.
This 180-degree change baffles those around her, but Yumeko, now brimming with a new zest for life and unshakeable confidence, is ready to tackle various challenges, including love, work, and friendships. The narrative also hints at a potential mystery surrounding her accident and transformation.
Addressing Body Image and Self-Worth
Plus-Sized Misadventures in Love explores themes of self-love, self-image, and mental health, with critics noting its attempt to offer a deeper commentary on society’s perception of plus-size individuals and body dysmorphia. Unlike some portrayals, the main character, Yumeko, does not lose weight and her plus-sized identity is central to her journey of self-acceptance and influencing her surroundings positively.
Key Cast and Production Team
The main cast features Aya Endō as the voice of the transformed Yumeko Kōda and Yūma Uchida as Keisuke Yūki. Other notable cast members include Akari Kitō as Saki Tamai, Tomokazu Sugita as Hiroki Maezono, Takuya Eguchi as Yutaka Shigemori, Eiji Takeuchi as Masahiko Hosoi, Junichi Suwabe as Motoki Minami, and Shōya Chiba as Shunzaburō Tanigawa.
The anime adaptation is directed by Kazuomi Koga, known for his work on Rent-A-Girlfriend, at studio Marvy Jack. Aya Watatane, who also handled the screenplay for the live-action drama adaptation of the manga, is responsible for the series composition and episode screenplays. Atsuko Takahashi is credited with character designs, while the music is composed by Satoshi Hōno and Kaori Nakano.
The opening theme song, “Happy Yummy Lucky Yummy,” is performed by GANG PARADE, and the ending theme song, “Watashi de Yokatta!!!” (I’m Glad It’s Me!!!), is performed by Yūma Uchida.
The series is poised to offer viewers a unique blend of romantic comedy and heartfelt exploration of self-acceptance.
