AnimEigo, in collaboration with its parent company MediaOCD, has announced plans to release a fully authored 1080p HD remastered edition of Osamu Tezuka’s 1983 anime special, A Time Slip of 10,000 Years: Prime Rose, on Blu-ray Disc in early 2026. This new release will feature both the original Japanese audio and the recently produced English dub, alongside a variety of bonus features. The license for this release was acquired from SkySet Entertainment.
Revitalizing a Tezuka Classic in High Definition
The upcoming Blu-ray will offer a significant upgrade, presenting the anime in 1080p HD. This follows a previous 720p Blu-ray release by SkySet Entertainment on June 14, which marked the anime’s first North American release and its debut English dub. AnimEigo and MediaOCD are known for their quality film restoration and Blu-ray production, frequently working with companies like Discotek Media.
AnimEigo, established in 1988, is an American entertainment company recognized for licensing and distributing anime, samurai films, and Japanese cinema. They have played a crucial role in giving anime a noticeable following in North America, with past releases including titles like Urusei Yatsura and Bubblegum Crisis. MediaOCD acquired AnimEigo’s video distribution business in March 2024.
The Story of A Time Slip of 10,000 Years: Prime Rose
The 90-minute anime special, originally directed by Satoshi Dezaki, first aired in Japan on August 21, 1983, as part of the “24-Hour Television: Love Saves the Earth” charity program. It is based on Osamu Tezuka’s Prime Rose manga, which was serialized in Akita Publishing’s Weekly Shōnen Champion magazine from 1982 to 1983. The anime, however, features a new story written specifically for the film, as the manga was not yet complete at the time of its production.
The dystopian fantasy adventure follows a powerful entity known as Death Mask, who teleports Kujukuri City, Japan, and Dallas, Texas, 10,000 years into the future. These cities are then reshaped into a brutal battleground where only the strongest can survive. The narrative centers on Gai Tanbara, a member of the Time Patrol, who ventures into this future determined to defeat Death Mask and restore the timeline. Along his journey, he encounters Emiya, a fierce warrior fighting to reclaim her city from the encroaching darkness. Together, they face the perils of a shattered world and the sinister forces threatening humanity’s fate.
English Dub and Special Features
The English dub for A Time Slip of 10,000 Years: Prime Rose features a cast that includes KyLeigh Zimmerer as Emiya Tachi, Jacob Eiseman as Gai Tanbara, Christina Assaf Costello as Bunretsu Tanbara, David Wald as Pilar, and John Swasey as Jinba. The English dub director is Phebe Fabacher, with Hayden Davis as the engineer and Kym Rose handling adaptation.
The AnimEigo Blu-ray release is set to include a range of bonus features. These will encompass English dub outtakes, interviews with the English voice cast, staff commentary, trailer videos, and pre-production sketches from Tezuka Productions. The movie has an approximate runtime of 90 minutes and will be presented in its original 4×3 aspect ratio.
The release will be available for purchase via the MediaOCD Store, Crunchyroll Store, Amazon, and other retailers. Anime enthusiasts and fans of Osamu Tezuka’s extensive body of work can anticipate this enhanced presentation of a unique entry in the “God of Manga’s” animated catalog.
