What is Atashin’chi?
Atashin’chi (short for “atashi no uchi,” meaning “my home” or “my family” in a feminine, spoken form) is a Japanese comedy manga series by Eiko Kera. It depicts the humorous day-to-day life of the four-member Tachibana family: the clumsy yet well-meaning Mother, the quiet Father, and their high school children, romantic Mikan and seemingly emotionless but naive Yuzuhiko.
The original manga was serialized in the Sunday edition of the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper from 1994 to 2012, with a resumption in AERA magazine from 2019 under the title Atashinchi SUPER. Its widespread popularity led to multiple anime adaptations and films.
Previous Anime Adaptations
The Atashin’chi franchise has a rich history of animated content:
- Original TV Anime Series: A long-running television anime aired from 2002 to 2009, spanning hundreds of episodes.
- Anime Films: Two animated films were produced, one in 2003 and a 3D animated film in 2010.
- Shin Atashin’chi: A sequel television anime series, Shin Atashin’chi (“New Atashin’chi”), aired from October 2015 to April 2016 and was simulcast by Crunchyroll in certain regions.
- YouTube Streaming: The official Atashin’chi YouTube channel has been streaming select episodes of both the original series and Shin Atashin’chi with English subtitles since May 2020.
The Atashin’chi NEXT series served as the latest animation project for the enduring franchise, ensuring that new stories from Kera’s original work continue to reach fans.
