The Premise of Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon
The anime adapts the popular light novel series, which began serialization on the online platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō in April 2020. Hobby Japan later acquired it for print release in May 2021. J-Novel Club publishes the light novel series in English, while Seven Seas Entertainment handles the English release of the manga adaptation by Takafumi Ōmae.
The story follows Light, a human adventurer who is betrayed by his trusted companions and left for dead in the deepest part of the Abyss, a perilous dungeon. Surviving by sheer luck, Light utilizes his unique skill, “Unlimited Gacha.” This ability, which previously only produced junk, now summons powerful Level 9999 warriors, including the fighter Mei. Three years later, Light has established his own kingdom within the dungeon, surrounded by loyal and powerful allies. Now a formidable Level 9999 Overlord, Light plans to ascend to the surface and exact his revenge on those who betrayed him. The series promises a blend of fantasy, betrayal, and revenge, exploring themes of trauma and retribution.
