CloverWorks, the acclaimed animation studio, has announced that its original anime film, now officially titled Grotesqqque, will premiere in 2026. The announcement was accompanied by the release of a new promotional video, offering a glimpse into the anticipated project.
A Three-Part Narrative from Atsushi Nishigori
The film is an ambitious omnibus, presenting three distinct stories, each exploring different worldviews. Leading the project is director Atsushi Nishigori, known for his work on popular titles such as The IDOLM@STER and DARLING in the FRANXX.
The three segments composing Grotesqqque are:
- “Elly Aliens”: This segment features a pop aesthetic, showcasing a girl alongside a mysterious alien-like creature.
- “Yoroshiku Shojo”: Pronounced as “Yoroshiku. Shojo,” this title carries a double meaning, playing on “Nice to Meet You. Girl” and the more ominous “Evening Dew Heads to Its Death. Girl.” This story depicts beautiful girls battling in a neon-lit night city.
- “Nocturne: Kono Grotesque na Yoru ni”: Romanized as “Nocturn: En Cette Nuit Grotesque,” this part contrasts lighthearted scenes of four girls with more serious, darker imagery, including blood-stained girls.
From “Grotesque” to “Grotesqqque” and a Pushed Release
The project was initially unveiled at Anime Expo 2024 under the tentative title Grotesque and was slated for a 2025 release. The recent announcement not only confirmed the updated title Grotesqqque but also shifted its theatrical debut to 2026.
A Collaborative Effort by JOEN
Grotesqqque marks a significant venture for JOEN, the production company behind the film. JOEN is a collaborative entity formed in 2022 by prominent industry players: Sony media subsidiary Aniplex, animation studios CloverWorks and Wit Studio, and publisher Shueisha. This partnership aims to foster a robust creative environment for animation production, prioritizing quality and creator well-being. CloverWorks producer Yūichi Fukushima and Wit Studio producer Tetsuya Nakatake serve as the representative directors of JOEN.
