Dark Horse Manga has announced that it will be publishing Gou Tanabe’s manga adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s classic horror story, The Colour Out of Space. This highly anticipated release is set to hit bookstores on July 1, 2025, and comic shops on July 2, 2025. The English translation will be handled by Eisner Award-winning translator Zack Davisson, who has worked on previous English releases of Tanabe’s Lovecraft adaptations.

A New Addition to Tanabe’s Lovecraftian Collection

This latest release will be a welcome addition to the growing collection of Gou Tanabe’s manga adaptations of H.P. Lovecraft’s works. Tanabe is highly regarded for his ability to capture the eerie atmosphere and cosmic dread that are hallmarks of Lovecraft’s writing. His previous adaptations include The Hound and Other Stories, At The Mountains Of Madness, The Shadow Over Innsmouth, and The Call of Cthulhu, all of which have garnered praise from fans and critics alike. His detailed black-and-white art style effectively brings Lovecraft’s monstrous visions to life.

Tanabe’s Unique Approach to Lovecraft

Gou Tanabe is a renowned Japanese manga artist celebrated for his unique approach to adapting H.P. Lovecraft’s cosmic horror. Unlike many artists who focus on over-the-top action or stylized horror, Tanabe approaches Lovecraft’s work with reverence and precision. His faithful recreations of the original stories capture the idea that humans are seeing things they were not designed to experience. Tanabe’s works are not just retellings; they add a unique visual dimension to the stories. He is known for his intricate artwork, which perfectly conveys the unsettling and often indescribable horrors found in Lovecraft’s tales.

The Colour Out of Space: A Tale of Cosmic Horror

The Colour Out of Space, originally written in March 1927, is a science fiction/horror short story that follows an unnamed narrator as he pieces together the events surrounding an area known as the “blasted heath” in the hills west of Arkham, Massachusetts. The story begins with a surveyor examining the area for a new reservoir. He soon discovers the disturbing history of the land, marked by a five-acre desolate void.

The Meteorite and Its Impact

The story unfolds through the perspective of an elderly local named Ammi, who recounts the events of 1882 when a strange meteorite fell from the sky onto a local farm. This meteorite proves to be no ordinary space rock, exhibiting properties unlike any known element and a strange color that defies description. When scientists attempt to study it, the meteorite vanishes from the lab, leaving behind a lingering presence that begins to poison the surrounding environment and the people within it.

The Unnatural Blight

The effects of the “meteorite” are catastrophic. Plants grow large but foul-tasting, animals become grotesque and maddened, and the people slowly descend into insanity or die. The land is blighted, and a strange, creeping dread permeates the area. The mysterious color seeps into the water supply, slowly poisoning all forms of life. The story culminates with the disappearance of the last remaining members of the family who owned the farm where the object landed, and the emergence of the “colour out of space,” before returning to the sky.

Dark Horse Comics: Bringing Lovecraft to a Wider Audience

Dark Horse Comics has been instrumental in bringing Gou Tanabe’s works to an international audience. Their dedication to publishing high-quality manga adaptations of Lovecraft’s stories has helped to introduce the author’s work to a new generation of readers. The upcoming release of The Colour Out of Space is part of Dark Horse’s ongoing commitment to showcasing the best in manga adaptations of classic horror literature.

Release Details

The Colour Out of Space manga will be available in paperback format, spanning 194 pages, and will be priced at $14.99. It is scheduled for release in bookstores on July 1, 2025, and comic shops on July 2, 2025. The English translation by Zack Davisson ensures that the nuances and atmosphere of the original story are accurately conveyed.

A Must-Read for Horror and Manga Fans

Gou Tanabe’s manga adaptation of The Colour Out of Space is poised to be a must-read for both fans of H.P. Lovecraft and manga enthusiasts. His ability to translate the cosmic horror of Lovecraft’s prose into a visual medium makes this upcoming release a highly anticipated event. The combination of a chilling story with Tanabe’s incredible artwork promises to deliver a truly terrifying experience. The partnership between Gou Tanabe and Dark Horse Comics continues to bring some of the most faithful and chilling adaptations of Lovecraft’s works to the world. This latest addition to the collection is sure to delight fans and further solidify Tanabe’s reputation as a master of Lovecraftian horror.
