Dark Horse Comics has offered an exclusive look at Dur-An-Ki, the fantasy manga based on an original story by the late Berserk creator Kentarō Miura and illustrated by Studio Gaga. The preview, revealed on Monday, includes the cover and an eight-page sneak peek into the highly anticipated English release. Fans can expect the single paperback volume to hit bookstores and comic shops on September 23, 2025.
Delving into the Mythological World of Dur-An-Ki
Dur-An-Ki takes readers to an ancient world inspired by Greek and Mesopotamian myths, weaving a narrative around a unique protagonist named Usumgal. This wondrous child, born of the gods, is neither human nor divine, and transcends typical gender definitions. Usumgal possesses an inventive mind, creating solutions where needed, and embarks on adventures that may define their destiny after descending from the holy mountain and befriending humans.
The manga originally serialized in Japan’s Young Animal Zero magazine, beginning in September 2019 and concluding its run in May 2020. Following Miura’s untimely passing in May 2021, Hakusensha and Studio Gaga collectively decided to conclude the series in September 2021.
Kentarō Miura’s Vision and Studio Gaga’s Artistry
Kentarō Miura, renowned worldwide for his dark fantasy epic Berserk, produced the original story for Dur-An-Ki. While Miura provided the foundational storyboards and rough copies, his trusted team at Studio Gaga handled the majority of the artwork, including the inking. This collaborative approach allowed Miura to offer a stable working environment for his assistants while still contributing his creative genius. Studio Gaga continues to work on Berserk posthumously, a testament to Miura’s enduring legacy.
Exclusive Bonus Materials for English Release
Dark Horse’s English release of Dur-An-Ki will not only present the complete six chapters of the manga but also include a wealth of bonus materials. These extras are designed to give readers deeper insight into Miura’s creative process, featuring the original story outline, concept illustrations, and other developmental materials. This addition offers a rare glimpse into the mind of one of manga’s most influential creators.
The impending release marks a significant moment for fans eager to explore another facet of Miura’s incredible storytelling, brought to life by the talented hands of Studio Gaga.
