The World of “Dusk Beyond the End of the World”
The anime, whose Japanese title is Towa no Yugure (meaning ‘Twilight of Eternity’), is an original work by P.A. Works, produced as part of the studio’s 25th-anniversary celebration. The story is set 200 years in the future, where high school student Akira Himegami awakens from cryogenic sleep to a world drastically altered by war.
In this new society, a unified organization called OWEL governs humanity, and a system known as “Elsie” (or “LC”) has replaced traditional marriage. Akira’s journey begins when he encounters an android named Yugure, who bears a striking resemblance to his lost girlfriend, Towasa. Yugure’s immediate proposal of marriage to a bewildered Akira propels the protagonist on a quest to find the real Towasa, believing she must still exist somewhere in this transformed world.
The narrative promises to explore the evolving forms of love, including relationships between humans and androids, against a backdrop of advanced AI and significant societal shifts. The series aims to depict these emotions with beauty, brutality, and even comedy.
