Hiroshi Motomiya, the celebrated manga artist best known for his iconic series Salaryman Kintaro, has announced a hiatus for his ongoing manga, Enma. While fans eagerly await its return, Motomiya’s legacy continues to expand with new live-action film adaptations of Salaryman Kintaro set to release in early 2025 and a brand new manga series launched in 2024.

Enma’s Hiatus for “Material Gathering”

On April 1, 2025, it was announced that Enma would be going on hiatus. The reason cited was Motomiya’s need to gather more source material to enrich the series. This “long-term material gathering” suggests a commitment to maintaining the quality and depth that Motomiya is known for. Enma premiered in Weekly Young Jump on January 9, 2025, quickly garnering attention for its mature themes, social commentary, and human drama. The manga centers on Ken Ōshima, a kind-hearted man who takes on the difficult role of a debt collector, tasked with recovering a five billion yen loan while confronting gangsters and corrupt politicians. The series is scheduled to resume in Weekly Young Jump‘s 24th issue in May 2025.

Salaryman Kintaro: A Lasting Legacy

Salaryman Kintaro, created by Hiroshi Motomiya, remains one of his most popular and enduring works. The manga follows Kintaro Yajima, a former Bōsōzoku (motorcycle gang) leader who transitions into the corporate world as a salaryman to fulfill a promise to his late wife. The original Salaryman Kintaro manga was serialized in Weekly Young Jump from 1994 to 2002. Over 30 million copies of the manga have been sold, leading to numerous adaptations, including:

  • Live-action films: A popular film directed by Takashi Miike in 1999.
  • Television dramas: Four seasons aired on TBS from 1999 to 2004, starring Katsunori Takahashi, and two seasons on TV Asahi from 2008 to 2010, starring Masaru Nagai.
  • Anime series: A 20-episode anime television series aired in 2001.

In 2025, Salaryman Kintaro is once again inspiring two new live-action films: Salaryman Kintaro Akatsuki-hen (Salaryman Kintaro Dawn), released on January 10, 2025, and Salaryman Kintaro Sakigake-hen (Salaryman Kintaro Vanguard), released on February 7, 2025. Nobuyuki Suzuki plays the lead role of Kintaro Yajima in these films.

Hiroshi Motomiya’s Other Works

Alongside Enma, Motomiya is currently working on Jinsei Iroiro (launched in 2024) and Takeki Ōgon no Kuni: Takahashi Korekiyo (ongoing since 2022). Some of his other notable works include:

  • Otoko Ippiki Gaki Daisho (1968)
  • Ore no Sora
  • Otokogi
  • Tenchi wo Kurau (1983–1984)

Motomiya’s career began in 1965, and his works often explore themes of politics, economics, the yakuza, the education system, and religion, portraying strong-willed characters with steadfast philosophies on life.

New Manga: Jinsei Iroiro

In addition to his ongoing work and the Enma hiatus, Motomiya launched a new manga series titled Jinsei Iroiro (The Variety of Life) in Grand Jump magazine on June 5, 2024. This series adds another dimension to Motomiya’s diverse portfolio.

MangaPlanet and English Releases

For English-speaking fans, Manga Planet is currently releasing the original Salaryman Kintaro manga in English, providing an opportunity to experience this classic series.

Live-Action Films in 2025: A Fresh Take

The upcoming live-action films, Salaryman Kintaro Akatsuki-hen and Salaryman Kintaro Sakigake-hen, aim to bring a fresh perspective to the beloved series. Nobuyuki Suzuki, who plays Kintaro, expressed his gratitude for the role, noting the character’s unconventional approach and inner strength. The films are directed by Ten Shimoyama, with scripts by Shinichi Tanaka.

Synopsis of Salaryman Kintaro

The Salaryman Kintaro manga tells the story of Kintaro Yajima, a former leader of a motorcycle gang who leaves his hometown after the death of his wife, Akemi. He moves to Tokyo with his son, Ryouta, and begins a new career as a salaryman. The series explores his challenges in navigating office politics and corporate life, often clashing with conventional norms due to his direct and honest approach.

Reception and Reviews

Salaryman Kintaro has received positive reviews for its engaging storyline and unique characters. While some compare it to other manga with similar themes, such as GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka), Salaryman Kintaro is distinguished by its focus on political and social commentary within the corporate world.

Where to Watch

  • Salaryman Kintaro Akatsuki-hen: In theaters January 10, 2025 (Japan).
  • Salaryman Kintaro Sakigake-hen: In theaters February 7, 2025 (Japan).

A Manga Classic

Hiroshi Motomiya’s Salaryman Kintaro remains a significant work in the manga world, inspiring numerous adaptations and resonating with audiences through its portrayal of a unique character navigating the complexities of corporate life. While Enma is temporarily on hold, Motomiya’s ongoing projects and the new Salaryman Kintaro films ensure that his creative influence continues to thrive.
