The highly anticipated CG anime short, Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express, has unveiled its second trailer, revealing additional cast members and the nostalgic theme song ahead of its July 3 premiere. The sequel to animator Yōhei Kameyama’s viral 2022 short, Milky☆Highway, promises another eccentric space adventure.
New Voices Join the Interstellar Journey
The newly announced cast members bring fresh talent to the quirky ensemble, joining previously revealed Momoko Terasawa as Chiharu and Anna Nagase as Makina. The expanded voice cast includes:
- Hisako Kanemoto as Akane
- Mikako Komatsu as Ryōko
- Kōki Uchiyama as Kurt
- Makoto Koichi as Kanata
- Yoshitaka Yamaya as Max
These actors will portray the new set of misfits caught up in the cosmic chaos.
A Classic Tune for a Modern Adventure
The second trailer also revealed that the anime’s theme song will be “Gingakei Made Tonde Ike!” (Fly to the Galaxy!), a 1977 song by the iconic Japanese girl group Candies. This choice of a retro-pop track sets a unique tone, blending classic J-pop vibes with the futuristic CG animation.
The Peculiar Premise of Milky☆Subway
The story of Milky☆Subway centers on super human Chiharu and cyborg Makina, who find themselves arrested for violating space traffic laws. Their community service assignment: cleaning the “Milky☆Subway,” an interplanetary train. What begins as a seemingly mundane task quickly spirals into pandemonium when the train unexpectedly blasts off into deep space, leaving the inexperienced crew to navigate chaotic circumstances with “no purpose, no principle, no point,” powered only by “pure momentum!”
A One-Man Production Takes Flight
Yōhei Kameyama, the original creator of Milky☆Highway, returns to direct, write, and produce Milky☆Subway. Kameyama is also credited with handling character designs, modeling, animation, and editing, showcasing an impressive level of individual craftsmanship that has captivated fans worldwide since his viral 2022 short, which garnered over 6.7 million views combined for its English-subtitled and original versions. The project is presented by Shin-Ei Animation and produced by Titan Industries.
Global Premiere and Accessibility
Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express is set to premiere on July 3 on the Tokyo MX channel at 9:54 p.m. JST. Crucially for international viewers, the anime will also stream simultaneously on YouTube, complete with dubbed versions in ten languages: English, Portuguese, Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Thai, Indonesian, French, Hindi, and Russian.
