Mihona Fujii, the acclaimed manga artist best known for her hit series GALS!, is set to launch a new short manga titled Shukujo no Jōken (The Conditions of a Lady) on August 28. The romantic comedy series will debut in the next issue of Shueisha’s Cocohana magazine.
A Return to Romantic Comedy for Fujii
Fujii herself confirmed on her X (formerly Twitter) account that the new manga will be a romantic comedy, a genre she has successfully explored throughout her career. This announcement comes as exciting news for fans of her previous works, especially those who enjoyed the lively and engaging narratives of GALS!
The Legacy of GALS!
Mihona Fujii rose to prominence with GALS!, which was serialized in Shueisha’s Ribon magazine from 1998 to 2002. The manga, which chronicled the adventures of Ran Kotobuki and her friends navigating the Shibuya gyaru subculture, gained significant popularity and was compiled into 10 volumes. Its success led to a 52-episode anime adaptation titled Super GALS! Kotobuki Ran, which premiered in 2001.
The original GALS! manga was also published in English by CMX Manga. The series remains a notable representation of the Heisei-era gyaru culture.
GALS!! and Future Endeavors
In 2019, Fujii launched a sequel to her iconic series, GALS!! (with two exclamation points), on Shueisha’s Manga Mee app. This continuation picked up where the original manga left off, following Ran, Miyu, and Aya after their graduation as they continued their lives in Shibuya. GALS!! concluded in December 2022, with its fifth and final volume published in March 2023.
With the upcoming launch of Shukujo no Jōken, Mihona Fujii continues to engage her audience with fresh stories while building on her established reputation for creating compelling and entertaining romantic comedies.
