Jujutsu Kaisen creator Gege Akutami has launched a new short-term manga titled Jujutsu Kaisen: Mojuro, with Cipher Academy illustrator Yuji Iwasaki joining as the artist. The highly anticipated series, confirmed as a spin-off set within the expansive Jujutsu Kaisen universe, debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump on September 7, 2025. This new venture marks Akutami’s return to the world of sorcerers and curses less than a year after the main series concluded.
A New Chapter in the Jujutsu Kaisen Universe
The new manga, officially titled Jujutsu Kaisen: Mojuro (with some initial reports referencing “Mimojuro”), sees Gege Akutami take on the role of writer, steering the narrative of this fresh exploration. This announcement comes after a year of silence from Akutami following Jujutsu Kaisen‘s conclusion in September 2024, which had left many fans eager for a follow-up. Akutami himself clarified that Mojuro is not a direct continuation but rather a “parallel exploration” of the universe, suggesting room for diverse eras, sorcerers, and storylines while retaining the established themes.
Yuji Iwasaki Joins as Illustrator
A significant aspect of this new project is the collaboration with Yuji Iwasaki, renowned for his work on Cipher Academy. Iwasaki is credited as the artist for Jujutsu Kaisen: Mojuro, bringing his distinct visual style to Akutami’s narrative. The partnership has generated considerable excitement, with Akutami reportedly praising Iwasaki’s “superb” drawings.
Planned Short-Term Serialization
Jujutsu Kaisen: Mojuro is set for a fixed short-term serialization, planned to run for approximately six months and be collected into roughly three volumes. The debut chapter was substantial, spanning 54 pages and including color spreads, a format typical for significant Jump launches. Akutami expressed in a comment that he would be happy if fans embraced Mojuro as a new entry point into the world of jujutsu, rather than solely viewing it as a direct sequel.
Exploring a Parallel World and Fan Speculation
While Akutami has emphasized a parallel approach, allowing for the development of different eras and characters, initial leaks and fan theories have already begun to circulate regarding the plot. Some speculation suggests Mojuro could be set in the future, potentially following the grandchildren of established characters like Yuta Okkotsu and Maki Zenin, effectively canonizing the Yuta x Maki relationship. The series is described as “experimental,” hinting at a potential stylistic divergence from Akutami’s previous work and an opportunity to expand on the world-building with new cursed techniques and clans.
Availability and Future of the Franchise
Jujutsu Kaisen: Mojuro began its serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump, with chapters also accessible to international readers via platforms like Viz Media’s Shonen Jump and Shueisha’s Manga Plus. The launch of Mojuro coincides with other ongoing expansions of the Jujutsu Kaisen franchise, including an exhibition for the anime’s second season, updates to the Jujutsu Kaisen Phantom Parade game, and even a spin-off novel by horror novelist Yumeaki Hirayama. This new short-term manga aims to provide a fresh perspective while maintaining ties to the beloved original series.
